[edit] Delete rather than Merge?

IMO, this page shouldn't be merged; it should be deleted. It's very poorly written on both syntactic and technical levels (it REALLY grates an editor). I accessed this page for a refresher on the minimal config, as I haven't used SAMBA/CIFS in some time (I've just bailing-wired together a scanner/printer/disk server out of an ancient AMD/350 running Win98SE SR2.1a). I was simply looking for a refresher. By the time I finished the article, I had NO IDEA which way was up.

For starters, first-person pronouns are STRICTLY against Wiki rules, generally speaking (how many encyclopedia articles have you read in your life that contained "I", "me", "my" with ANY regularity?).

By my count, SIX different methods of accomplishing the stated mission are outlined, in varying degrees of detail. NO mention is made of which of the packages installed by a prior method are needed by the subsequent ones (yes, the reader could research the issue themselves - but isn't that the purpose of a Wiki?).

While I haven't given the issue extensive thought (not an issue in my environment), IMNSHO, the author's method of allowing users (read: ANY user) to mount cifs shares themselves creates a serious security snafu.

Lastly, the (Arch)Wiki article that merging is suggested with, is WORSE. Totally in the 1st person, uses scarily outdated packages/syntax, and admits right up top that IT is based on another, non-Wiki, page, which is hyperlinked to, but clicking the link returns "Forbidden Access"...

Again, IMNSHO, this article needs a FULL rewrite, one that is current, in something approaching a decent writing style, or else it needs to be deleted. If I was current on SAMBA, I'd do the work myself, but that's WHY I came across the page! I'm NOT current with SAMBA.

Sorry to pick on the author (I haven't looked at the page revision history to see who wrote it and have no intention to do so; THAT is NOT my concern).

Sorry for the tome. Archers know I'm not particularly concise. --Grndrush 06:05, 1 August 2008 (EDT)
