Installation
See the Beginners' Guide

Video
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

You shouldn't need a xorg.conf to get into X.

The wide screen resolution, 1280x800 worked out of the box, no hacks/patches/tricks needed.

Wireless
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN Network Connection (rev 61)
Driver - Built into kernel, Firmware - iwlwifi-4965-ucode from installtion disk under 'Support'. Place 'iwl4965' in your modules array in rc.conf.

Sound
The module is snd_hda_intel. Use alsa, it just works.
Mic/Recording - Haven't tried.

Media
CD burning - Works.
DVD burning - Works.
CD Ripping - Works.

Motioneye Inscreen Camera
lsusb will show
05ca:1839 Ricoh Co., Ltd
which has support provided by the r5u870 driver (depends on kernel26<2.6.26).

download the latest trunk using svn, make, and make install as per the normal build drill...
svn co http://svn.mediati.org/svn/r5u870/trunk ~/r5u870
cd ~/r5u870
make
make install
Note: One may forgo the last step in favor of being required to manually load the driver and 'keep it simple' (information on manually loading can be found in the README file that you get from the trunk.
Note: A package exists in AUR 'r5u870' and 'r5u870-svn' which still work with depends kernel26<2.6.26 and kernel26>2.6.24, feel free to use those too.
All that's left now is
modprobe r5u870

you can test your webcam with xawtv like so
xawtv /dev/video0

kernel26>2.6.26: If you have a kernel that falls beyond the depends for 'r5u870' then you can try 'r5u87x' which is a user-space utility that simply loads the camera's firmware into the device. unloading and reloading uvcvideo module will give you your /dev/video* device. There are certain problems with this as any request for a resolution change below 640x480 will report successful by the camera, but actually fails. I will be following developement closely. --OrionFyre 15:13, 14 November 2008 (EST)

flashcam note Flashcam project was a video loopback device that provided a v4l device that worked with flash, this project is now obsolete as flash10 supports v4l2 and as it too is subject to the same breakage that occures to r5u870 with kernel26>2.6.26. My intention was to continue to use flashcam to take vga video (which works with uvcvideo) and have flashcam provide the proper resolution needed for the various applications--OrionFyre 15:13, 14 November 2008 (EST)
Introduction
Stalonetray is a stand-alone freedesktop.org and KDE system tray (notification area) for X Window System/X11 (e.g. X.Org or XFree 86). It has full XEMBED support and minimal dependencies: an X11 lib only. Stalonetray works with virtually any EWMH-compliant window manager.

Window managers that are reported to work well with stalonetray are: FVWM, OpenBox, Enlightenment, ion3, Compiz and Xmonad

Installation
Stalonetray is available from the standard repositories:

# pacman -S stalonetray

Once installed, you must place the stalonetrayrc file in your home directory, you can do this by:

# cp /etc/stalonetrayrc ~/.stalonetrayrc
Note: do this as a regular user, not as root.

Using Stalonetray with Openbox
To run stalonetray in Openbox, you need to run:
# stalonetray -w

Openbox now treats the tray as the dock, and you can adjust its position by using the Openbox Configuration Tool.

To have Stalonetray run on start up, add

stalonetray -w &

to your ~/.xinitrc file.
Sjodenhttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=User_talk:Sjoden&diff=43209User talk:Sjoden2008-06-17T19:55:22Z
Sjoden:

Then I take it the instructions worked for you then? have you tried using it with a flash site? I can't seem to figure out why it is displaying only black screens--OrionFyre 10:24, 14 June 2008 (EDT)

Sorry, I haven't tried it yet, I was just really happy that someone had, and posted instructions. Idk if I'll have time to test it in the next couple days, I might be able to this afternoon though, I'll post if I find out anything.
You shouldn't need a xorg.conf to get into X, but if you want to make a working xorg.conf type...
Xorg -configure
The wide screen resolution, 1200x800 worked out of the box, no hacks/patches/tricks needed.

Xorg-server(1.4.0.90-13) and xf86-video-intel(2.3.1-1) from extra work great. Haven't tried 3D support yet.

Wireless
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN Network Connection (rev 61)
Driver - Built into kernel, Firmware - iwlwifi-4965-ucode from installtion disk under 'Support'. Place 'iwl4965' in your modules array in rc.conf.

Sound
The module is snd_hda_intel. Use alsa, it just works.
Mic/Recording - Haven't tried.

Media
CD burning - Works.
DVD burning - Works.
CD Ripping - Works.

Motioneye Inscreen Camera
lsusb will show
05ca:1839 Ricoh Co., Ltd
which has support provided by the r5u870 driver.

download the latest trunk using svn, make, and make install as per the normal build drill...
svn co http://svn.mediati.org/svn/r5u870/trunk ~/r5u870
cd ~/r5u870
make
make install
Note: One may forgo the last step in favor of being required to manually load the driver and 'keep it simple' (information on manually loading can be found in the README file that you get from the trunk.

All that's left now is
modprobe r5u870

you can test your webcam with xawtv like so
xawtv /dev/video0

Thus far I have been unable to get this camera working with Flash. When flash directly uses this video device it displays only a solid black screen. (predicting 4vl1 compatibility problems) I will continue to investigate for native support. However a workaround found previously is located at the The Flashcam Project Flashcam stated simply is a loopback device which provides a v4l1 compatible video output. - --OrionFyre 02:24, 13 June 2008 (EDT)

I'm currently working on getting Arch set up on my new Toshiba Satellite P205D-S8804. This page isn't complete yet, but I'll work on it as I get things up!

Toshiba P205D-S8804
Base Install
I ran into an immediate snag using the Don't Panic install cd. The installer (and the initial installed system) will not boot. To work around, boot using this command:

$ arch acpi=off

And you should be able to install. When you boot your system for the first time, you will need to manually edit Grub to allow this to boot.
1) Press "e" on the default entry (or whatever entry you have set up Arch on)
2) Press "e" on the second line
3) Add "acpi=off" to the end of the line, and press <enter>
4) Press "b" to boot

You'll have to do this every time you boot until you run your first full system upgrade -- the problem is resolved with the newest kernel.

Networking
The on-board ethernet adaptor worked out of the box for me.

Wifi
This laptop has an Atheros based wireless chipset that I just could not get to work with the MadWifi drivers. My understanding is that they are much better supported in the next upcoming release of MadWifi. In the meantime, Ndiswrapper worked beautifully.

1) Add an "!" before ath_pci, ath_hal, and wlan in your /etc/rc.conf; add an entry for "ndiswrapper"
2) Install ndiswrapper and cabextract:

# pacman -S ndiswrapper ndiswrapper-utils cabextract

3) Download the drivers from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-66449
4) Run cabextract on that exe file
5) Install the NET5416.INF file with
# ndiswrapper -i NET5416.INF
6) run these commands
# ndiswrapper -m
# ndiswrapper -ma
# ndiswrapper -mi
# rmmod ndiswrapper
# modprobe ndiswrapper

And you should be all set to configure your wireless card.

Audio
Audio worked out of the box for me as well.
# pacman -S alsa-utils

and unmute the volume. This card is a little odd -- it won't automatically mute the main speakers when you plug in headphones -- hence the two channels in alsamixer. Don't know if thats a bug or a feature! ;-)
I'll post an update if I can find out how to get it to automatically mute.

Note: Remember to add your user to the audio group, log out and log back in!

I have yet to test things like line-out/spdif/microphone on this card.

Video
ATI Radeon X1200

The latest catalyst driver (8.01) supports this card, and the widescreen resolution this card is capable of (1440x900).

Visit the Ati wiki page for instructions on how to set that up.

Remember to add
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

to your xorg.conf, or accelerated 3D doesn't work.

Note: While glxinfo | grep direct = yes, fgl_glxgears will not run and glxgears causes a hard kernel lock. I'm trying to figure out what setting I have to change in Xorg.conf to get this to run -- more updates when I find it.

Also, I haven't tested dual displays or the S-Video out.
Touchpad
Works fine with the synaptics driver. View /var/log/pacman.log after you install for the necessary changes.
# pacman -S synaptics

Hotkeys
Not all keys on this keyboard that have a "hotkey" label are actually recognized (eg setkeycodes doesn't even recognize them) and no hotkeys appear to be funtional out of the box. More updates once I get those running.

CD/DVD/Labelflash
Have not tested, although the CD drive at least reads.
Not sure if Labelflash is supported under linux.

USB
Functional out of the box

Firewire
Have not tested.

PCMCIA
have not tested

Volume Wheel
Not functional. Will look for a solution.

5-in-1 card reader
Funtional out of the box, although we need to manually add a module to enable SD card support
# modprobe tifm_sd

and add tifm_sd to your /etc/rc.conf

I'm not actually sure if things like CompactFlash or MemoryStick are working, SD card is the only thing I have at the moment.

Power Management
Cpufreq
Cpu frequency scaling is supported and works well. Visit the cpufreq wiki page for instructions.

Hibernate
Appears to work flawlessly, although not really speedily.
The command
# pm-hibernate

accomplishes this quite well.
Make sure that pm-utils is installed
# pacman -S pm-utils

Suspend to Ram
To my utter shock and amazement, this also works out of the box.
Ensure that pm-utils is installed.
# pacman -S pm-utils

And make sure "vga=0" is in your menu.lst

So far, I've not found any hardware that does not work after a resume. Touchpad, wireless card and sound all appear fine.
Note: Your wireless connection is lost after a resume. You simply need to reconnect to the network.

Summary
This document attempts to configure libgphoto2 so that the members of the camera group can access a digital camera over USB. The aim was to keep this document simple and thus special cases were not covered. I would like change this so that we can work out any bugs and have a more streamlined configuration for the community. So feel free to post problems and solutions into the talk page and they may be added under a troubleshooting section. With that in mind, not all cameras are detected with --auto-detect(in gphoto2). Some cameras may show up with a generic name, or others with the wrong model name. If it works, don't try and fix it.

The article talks about configuring hotplug in order to get cameras working. Hotplug is now deprecated, it should be hotplug-free and replaced by udev if possible. --Pholie 06:21, 12 January 2006 (EST)

Sorry, my last post (just deleting it!) was a load of rubbish - I must have had some other problem with the pixels...
I looked at the PKGBUILD for libgphoto2 (should have thought of that sooner!), and this configuration stuff has now been converted into udev-ese (which I won't pretend to understand) and it seems to work out-of-the-package, without extra tweaking.
I tried it with my Kodak and gthumb without the files in /etc/hotplug/usb and it worked.
The install script creates a 'camera' group, so one is also relieved of this little job.
I guess the result is that this wiki page is now redundant.
Arch gets better all the time! Thanks maintainers!
I updated this article with how I have installed libgphoto2 and gphoto2/gtkam on the last 3 machines I have used it on. --Sjoden 01:58, 04 September 2007 (PST)

I have updated this page again. I have the pages 'libgphoto2', 'gphoto2', and 'Digital Camera' redirecting to this page, Digital Cameras. I feel it's important to have the information about gphoto2 on the main page because it is the author of this software's opinion that "This is the main user interface." and it is also a good troubleshooting step, if graphical frontends aren't working. Please email me if you want to remove anything.
