Introduction
The official Arch Linux IRC channel is #archlinux on the Freenode network.

There are also a number of other channels dedicated to Arch Linux maintained by community members, see: http://www.archlinux.org/irc/ for a listing.

Usage
To join the channels, you need an irc client. Wikipedia has a list of irc clients.
/connect irc.freenode.net
/join #archlinux

#archlinux - The official support channel
This is the main channel. The central topic for the channel is support and general discussion about Arch Linux.

The channel is currently +R. That means that you have to register and identify with the NickServ service before you can talk in the channel:
/msg nickserv help register
/msg nickserv help identify

#archlinux rules
* Follow the guidelines
: Freenode network policy
: Freenode channel guidelines
: #archlinux channel guidelines
* Client settings and bots
** If you want to bring a bot into the channel, then ask an operator before you do so.
** Auto-response in channel or in pm is not allowed (the only exception is 'away' responses at nick highlight in pm).
* Channelbot usage
** There is only one official channel bot. 'phrik n=archbot@archlinux/bot/phrik'
** Try to limit the bot usage in channel. Remember, you can '/query phrik' when the output is not needed in-channel.
** No spamming of bot commands
* Advertising
** Advertising is not allowed unless an op has given you permission to do so.
* Content/links
** The main topic of the channel is support for and discussion about Arch Linux.
** Talk about general software and hardware is allowed if it does not interfere with the main topic of the channel.
** Anything that is not covered by the previous statements is handled on a case-by-case basis at the op's discretion.

#archlinux guidelines
The main language of the channel is English. If you need help in another language, see the link above regarding other Arch Linux channels. You can also do /query alis list #archlinux*.

The channel topic often contains useful and/or important information. It is good practice to read it from time to time. You can use /topic to read it if your client does not display it.

Do not start flamewars, also avoid the "20 lines of 'foo > bar'" discussions.

Do not feed the trolls, if someone is trolling and/or baiting, then ignore them. Also feel free to notify a channel operator.

Spamming the channel is Bad (with a capital B). Use a pastebin if you have to paste something long (more than 3 lines).
Pastie and Codepad are two popular ones within the Arch community. Several pastebin programs exist in the repos, to output the result of a command to a file use
program &> program-output.txt
.

phrik (the channel bot) is not your personal toy, abusing him is not allowed. If you want to try out commands or look trough the help function, then do it in a /query or /msg. Example: /query phrik help <command>

Do not ask to ask, if anyone is alive or if anyone uses something, just state your question.

Help us help you, ask smart questions. It is easier for us to help you when you ask good/smart questions.

Ask for help, do not demand it, if nobody replies, wait for a few minutes before you restate your question. Most questions get answered by 'just another user', just like you. Even the developers that frequent the channel do so on their own time, by their own accord, by their own free will.

Do not be shy, feel free to help others, 'everyone' has something to contribute. The channel is a community effort to provide support, and depends on volunteers.

Help yourself before you ask. Read the Wiki and man pages, search the BBS and/or Google. Sticking to this method will often get you an answer faster, and you may just happen to learn something from it.

When asking for help, always reply to people that ask you for more information, if you do not know the answer then say so.

Set a good example; be what you want other people to be. If you act like a moron, then people will respond to you as if you were one. The behavior of those already in the channel is also a big influence on those new to the channel. If you want the channel to be a friendly place, then be friendly to others.

#archlinux operators
If you for some reason need the help of an op, do not be shy to /q(uery) or /msg us. Here is the list of ops as of 09 June 2009:

#archlinux-offtopic rules
* Follow the guidelines
: Freenode network policy
* Ops can kick people entirely at their own discretion, don't be a moron. If you think an op acted unfairly, bring it up.

#archlinux-offtopic operators
If you for some reason need the help of an op, do not be shy to /q(uery) or /msg us. Here is the list of ops as of 07.11.2008:

This is mainly a support channel. For a list of other Arch-related channels, see this.

Channel Rules
* Follow the guidelines - they are meant to make your stay a pleasant one.
** Freenode network policy.
** #archlinux channel guidelines.
* Client setting and bots
** If you want to bring a bot into the channel, then ask an operator before you do so.
** Please, turn off auto-rejoin.
** Don't use public away notifiers and nicks. Use your client's silent/away function instead.
* Advertising - not allowed in general. It will get you locked out and reported to a higher authority.
** Of course, suggesting to someone to go to #foo for help with their problem with foo is not considered advertising.
* Stupid rules to give people closure
** No soccer.
** No other sports.
** No drugs.
** No discussing your favorite brand of alcohol to show how manly you are.
** No talking about drugs to show how manly you are.
** No.
** No politics.
** No debating the channel operators decision for kicking/banning/whatever for half an hour.
** Off-topic chat is not allowed "because nothing was really happening in the channel."
** Debating whether off-topic chat is allowed when the channel is quiet is not allowed.

Channel Guidelines
* The main language of the channel is English. If you need help in another language, see the link above regarding other Archlinux channels. Remember, you can always create your own.
* Try to keep the channel somewhat family/work safe. No porn, gore, windows, politicians or anything similar unless absolutely required to aid good faith. In short, be on topic as much as possible; support. If you can't resist the urge to talk about your religion or your favorite toenail, then take it to #archlinux-offtopic.
* Don't start flamewars. DE/WM/$EDITOR/similar discussions are allowed, but if the temperature rises above 26°C then you are expected to drop it or move on to the offtopic channel.
* Don't feed the trolls.
* Spamming the channel is Bad (with a capital B). Use a pastebin if you have to paste something long (usually more than 3 lines). Pastie and rafb|Nopaste are two popular ones within the Arch community. There is also a cli frontend for rafb:
pacman -S nopaste
* phrik (the channel bot) is not your personal toy, abusing him is not allowed. If you want to try out commands or look trough the help function, then do it in a /query or /msg (alternatively PM).
* Don't ask to ask, if anyone is alive or if anyone uses something. Just state your question. Even if we don't use foo, we might know enough about it to help you.
* Ask for help, don't demand it. If nobody replies, wait for a few minutes before you restate your question. And yes, ask smart questions.
* Help yourself before you ask. Read the Wiki and man pages, search the BBS and/or Google. Sticking to this method will often get you an answer faster, and you may just happen to learn something from it.
* When asking for help, always reply to people that ask you for more information. If you don't know the answer then a "I don't know" is a lot better than silence.
* Set a good example, be what you want other people to be. If you act like a moron, then people will respond to you as if you were one. The behavior of those already in the channel is also a big influence on those new to the channel. If you want the channel to be a friendly place, then be friendly to others.
* Don't be shy. Feel free to help others. All the support in the channel is provided by volunteers. Most questions get answered by "just another user", just like you. Even the devs that frequent the channel do so on their own time, by their own accord, by their own free will.

WARNING: THIS ARTICLE IS INCOMPLETE! Visit the Arch forum thread link below to get information on installing Arch Linux on the Asus EEE PC.

Most of this information is from the Arch Forum. You can also find a lot of helpful information from the EEEUser Forum. There is also a nice Arch Linux installation guide on the EeeUser Wiki.

Before You Begin
Avoiding Pitfalls
The install is pretty normal, except that you'll need to avoid the pitfalls of our alternative Linux install:

# Never choose to use a journaling file system on the SSD partitions
# Never use a swap partition on the SSD
# Edit your new installation fstab to mount the SSD partitions "noatime"
# Never log messages or error log to the SSD

The rules ensure that we won't reach the maximum limit of writes on our SSD faster than we should.

Choosing Your Installation Media
The EEE PC does not have an optical drive installed on the machine. This means you will need to install Arch Linux through one of the alternative methods:

# External USB CD-ROM drive
# USB pen drive (Recommended)

Unfortunately, the kernel does not include drivers for a LAN or Wireless install.

Installing Arch Linux
Note: if you're using the USB pen drive as your media, then follow these instructions to create the installation USB stick.

Download the necessary drivers/modules
Since the stock kernel doesn't supports either the Eee ethernet or wireless network cards, you might want to download the ethernet or wireless drivers/modules that you need and copy them to the installation USB stick.

*You can download ethernet driver source from here.
*Wireless driver can be downloaded from here.
**The wireless driver requires a patch to make it work with the Eee PC. The patch can be download from here

*If you want to use dkite's eeemodules package, you should download the package from his website and put it on USB for ease of installing. Especially important is the eeemodules-2.6.22.9-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz, because we will need to install this package after installation for wireless and ethernet to work.

Booting Arch the installation CD/USB
Please refers to Beginners_Guide for detail instruction. Ideally, your CD/USB should boot up just fine on Eee PC without any need for additional options.

Start the Installation
If you are installing from the USB, then issue

mount /dev/sd[x] /src

To mount the usb.

Then just run

/arch/setup

To start the installation just like normal.

Prepare Hard Drive
The default Eee PC drive is split up into four partitions (here is some information about the partitioning):

* It is easiest to wipe the existing partitions and use one or two partitions for your install. One partition would be just '/', and two partitions would be '/boot' and '/'.
* Choose "NONE" for swap (see #2 in Avoiding Pitfalls).
* Select "ext2" as your filesystem (see #1 in Avoiding Pitfalls).

Select Packages
If you are installing from USB, then choose SRC as your source.

In addition to the BASE category, we also need all the packages in the DEVEL category for compiling our ethernet/wireless drivers.

If you intended to use wireless, then you'll also need the wireless_tools package from SUPPORT category.

Configure System
Edit /etc/rc.conf and add asus_acpi to the MODULES array:

MODULES = (... asus_acpi ...)

Arch will complains about this, pay no attention to the error message because once we install the patched version of asus_acpi module using dkite's package the error message will disappear.

Make these edits to "/etc/fstab":

* Add "noatime" to the options of your mounts (see #3 in Avoiding Pitfalls)
* (OPTIONAL) Add a new line: "tmpfs /var/log tmpfs size=1M 0 0" (WARNING: this will delete all your logs! See #4 in Avoiding Pitfalls)
** To save your startup/shutdown logs, look at the pitfalls link above.

Install Network Adapter Driver
After the installation, The first thing you will noticed after booting into your newly installed Arch Linux is that the network adapters (both ethernet and wireless) are not working. To install the drivers, mount the USB stick that contains the drivers by issues the following commands:

mkdir /mnt/usb
mount /dev/sd[x] /mnt/usb

Then follow the following instructions to install your network driver.

Atl2 ethernet driver
You can download ethernet driver source from here.

Extract the sources. You may need to modify the kernel version listed in the Makefile.

make clean
make
cp atl2.ko /lib/modules/2.6.24-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net # Change 2.6.24 as needed
depmod

Atheros wireless ethernet driver
Instructions from http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu#wireless_internet_using_native_madwifi_drivers to patch madwifi. This replaces the Arch madwifi packages.

wget 'http://madwifi.org/attachment/ticket/1679/madwifi-ng-0933.ar2425.20071130.i386.patch?format=raw'
wget http://snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi-ng/madwifi-ng-r2756-20071018.tar.gz
tar zxvf madwifi-ng-r2756-20071018.tar.gz
cd madwifi-ng-r2756-20071018
patch -p0 < ../madwifi-ng-0933.ar2425.20071130.i386.patch
make clean
make
sudo make install

If you have already downloaded both the driver source & the patch and have moved them into the USB, then both move the driver source & the patch into the same directory and issues the following command:

tar zxvf madwifi-ng-r2756-20071018.tar.gz
cd madwifi-ng-r2756-20071018
patch -p0 < ../madwifi-ng-0933.ar2425.20071130.i386.patch
make clean
make
sudo make install

Working against stock kernel.

Install wireless and ethernet drivers using dkite's eeemodules Package
Another way to install both wireless and ethernet drivers/modules, instate of having to build and install the drivers/modules yourself, is to use dkite's eeemodules Package, which included both wireless and ethernet drivers/modules, among other things.

Since Don't Panic installation CD comes with kernel version 2.6.22.9, we will need to use eeemodules-2.6.22.9-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz package, which you can get from his website, if you haven't got it already.

Mount the USB that contains the package and install it with this command:

pacman -Uf eeemodules-2.6.22.9-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

Then load the modules with

depmod

Restart and now you should have a working wireless/ethernet connection.

Install All the Necessary Modules
After you have installed and configured the driver, proceed to upgrade the system with pacman -Syu command. After the upgrade is complete, it is the time to decide which methods you would like to use to install the modules:

ATTENTION: Do NOT restart after upgrade the system and before you install the modules using one of the following methods, or your hardware (wifi, ethernet, etc.) WILL stop functioning.

Install modules using dkite's eeemodules package
dkite have created a package that contains all the necessary modules for wifi, ethernet connection, acpi and video camera hardware that comes with the Eee PC. His package is to be use with the stock kernel.

The following is the list of hardware/functions that are known to work with dkite's eeemodules Package:

*Wireless
*Ethernet
*Webcam
*Suspend/Resume

You can get the package from his website.

Currently there are three pre-complied package:

#eeemodules-2.6.22.9-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz for use with Don't Panic kernel.
#eeemodules-0.0.3-2.6.24.1.2-i686.pkg.tar.gz for the 2.6.24.14-2 kernel.

If you have newer or other version of kernel26, then you will need to download eeemodules.tar.gz, which contains PKGBUILD and all the necessary files, and build the package yourself.

*ATTENTION: You will also need to rebuild the package, using eeemodules.tar.gz, every time you upgrade your kernel, or else your hardware (wifi, ethernet, etc.) will stop functioning.

Installation Instructions
Install the package with the following command:

pacman -Uf eeemodules-<pkgver>.tar.gz

Then run a depmod command:

depmod

Attention: Do not forget to run the depmod command after installing the package, otherwise the various hardware won't function!

If you want to use the webcam then you might also need to load the asus_acpi module. Edit the /etc/rc.conf file and insert asus_acpi into MODULES array:

MODULES = (... asus_acpi ...)

Eee repository from toofishes
toofishes created a repository for the eee. You can find some basic packages like Pentium-M-optimized kernel and needed modules. Add
[eee]
Server = http://code.toofishes.net/packages/eee
to your /etc/pacman.conf to use the repository.

Package List
Currently, toofishes' repository contains the following packages:

*kernel-eee
customized kernel for Eee
*linux-uvc-eee-svn
webcam driver for Eee
*luvcview
webcam program for testing webcam driver
*madwifi-ng-eee
wifi driver for Eee

Installation Instruction
Simply use pacman to install the package that you need. For a working system, you'll need at least 3 packages: kernel-eee (the kernel), linux-uvc-eee-svn (webcam driver) and madwifi-ng-eee (the wifi driver).

Install the packages with this command:

pacman -Sy kernel-eee linux-uvc-eee-svn madwifi-ng-eee

ATTENTION: dkite's eeemodules package conflicts with the madwifi-ng-eee package. You need to remove dkite's eeemodules package before you can install toofishes madfwifi-ng-eee package.

Then, add the following to /boot/grub/menu.lst; note that no initrd is needed:
# (2) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux EEE kernel
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuzeee root=/dev/sda1 ro

Restart and select Arch Linux EEE kernel from the grub boot menu.

Getting Everything Working
By now, you should have Arch installed. The following is the guide on how to get the rest of your system working.

Xorg
You have two choices for video on the Eee- the newer xf86-video-intel driver, or the older xf86-video-i810 driver paired with 915resolution. Unless there is a compelling reason to use the i810 driver, the intel driver is the focus upstream and is being actively developed so it is your best choice.

You need these packages in addition to the Xorg's packages:

pacman -Sy synaptics xf86-video-intel

If you choose to use the older i180 video, you will have to install xf86-video-i810 and 915resolution as well. Note that the i180 driver and the intel driver cannot both be installed at the same time.

Then, just drop in the following xorg.conf into your /etc/X11/ directory:

Section "ServerLayout"

If you want to set up the i810 driver instead, you will also have to configure 915resolution and add it to your daemons line. This is not needed for the intel driver. Edit the /etc/conf.d/915resolution to look like this:

# Enter the VBIOS mode to patch
MODE="41"

# Enter the desired resolution
RESOLUTION="800 480"

Now put the 915resolution daemon into your /etc/rc.conf file:

DAEMONS=(... 915resolution ...)

Sound & Webcam
Sound
Some people have reported sound working right out of the box with no troubles. However, others might need to add the following line to /etc/modprobe.conf.

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig

If your internal microphone doesn't work, you probably have to turn the capture feature on. Simply fire up alsamixer, find your Capture control, and press spacebar to enable it.

Webcam
If you installed dkite eeemodules package or filoktetes's kernel, then you should already have webcam driver installed and don't need to install Linux UVC device driver. Just add:

echo 1 > /proc/acpi/asus/camera

to your /etc/rc.local file should be suffice to get your webcam working.

If you don't use dkite eeemodules package or filoktetes's kernel or prefers to install the driver yourself, then follows the following instructions.

First, install the Linux UVC device driver. Make sure you have the community repositories enabled, and run:

pacman -S linux-uvc-svn

Then just turn on the webcam (This requires the asus_acpi module):

echo 1 > /proc/acpi/asus/camera

If you want a simple application application to test it out with, install luvcview from the AUR, and run it with:

luvcview -f yuv

Alternatively, if you want the webcam application that the default Xandos installation uses, install ucview from the AUR.

The webcam also works fine with the latest version of Skype.

I have yet to get it working with vlc or any other software such as xawtv. If you know how, please update this.

*NOTE: For anyone who has accidentally disabled Auto Exposure for their webcam in luvcview (making the image dark), and can't enable it again, do the following:

Install libwebcam from the AUR.

Issue the following command:

uvcdynctrl --set "Exposure, Auto" 4

Getting Hot Keys, Graphic Indicators and Shutdown with the Power Button Working
If you want to have working hot keys for changing brightness and volumes, graphic indicators working as well as shutdown when press the power button (just like in the stock Eee PC), then you should install dkite's acpid_eee package, which can also be download form his website

The package itself can be install with

pacman -Uf acpid_eee-0.0.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz.tar

Shutdown problem
If your Eee won't shutdown properly (i.e. the power indicator led is on but the LCD screen is off), then by adding the following line

rmmod snd_hda_intel

To your /etc/rc.local.shutdown should fix the problem.

If this does not work, the module may not be able to be unloaded until after all services have finished. Do the above, then in /etc/rc.shutdown move

if [ -x /etc/rc.local.shutdown ]; then
/etc/rc.local.shutdown
fi

from where it was to directly above the line

# Terminate all processes

this will cause the rc.local.shutdown script to run after services have been exited. This fixed all issues for the person editing this note.

Additional Tips & Tweaks
Power down with the power button
*If you use dkite's acpid_eee package then you should already be able to shutdown by pressing the power button and should not need to do this.

The two alternatives here are described in Allow_users_to_shutdown.

If you don't already or don't plan to use sudo, it may be simpler to use the setuid /sbin/halt method, otherwise using sudo is preferred.

Below are all the steps required for the sudo method. If you want to use the setuid method, read the article linked above and perform the 'power' file step here, while omitting the 'sudo' in it.

pacman -S sudo

As root, do the following:

visudo

Add the following line to the file:

USER HOST = NOPASSWD: /sbin/poweroff

Where USER = the user you want to be able to power down with and HOST = your hostname (from /etc/rc.conf).

Now, create a file called /etc/acpi/events/power, containing:

# /etc/acpi/events/power
# This is called when the user presses the power button

event=button/power (PWR.||PBTN)
action=sudo /sbin/poweroff

Make sure that you execute

/etc/rc.d/acpid start

And/or add acpid to the daemons list in /etc/rc.conf:

DAEMONS=(hal, acpid ...

Compile the 'everything' Kernel
The 'everything' kernel has ath5k, which supports the Atheros chipset found on the EEE PC. Here are the instructions on compiling the 'everthing' kernel (thanks raymano!).

Use cpufreq for power saving
For scaling down the processor you have to load the p4_clockmod. Insert it into your /etc/rc.conf MODULES array for loading it at startup.
MODULES=(... p4_clockmod ...)
Then proceed like here.
Add the following into /etc/conf.d/cpufreq
governor="ondemand"
min_freq="113MHz"
max_freq="900MHz"
With enabled cpufreq it scales the processor between 113MHz up to max. frequency. That should save a lot on battery power. The stated 900MHz will be never reached by the eeePC, the p4_clockmod reports a wrong frequency here. But scaling works, you can feel it in the performance of eeePC that he slow down the processor.

The Trusted User (TU)
The Trusted User (TU) is a member of the community charged with
keeping the AUR in working order. He/she maintains popular packages, and
votes in administrative matters. A TU is elected from active community
members by current TUs in a democratic process. TUs are the only
members who have a final say in the direction of the AUR.

The TUs are governed using the TU bylaws

TU Duties
The TU and UNSUPPORTED
The TUs should also make an effort to check package submissions in UNSUPPORTED for malicious code and good PKGBUILDing standards. In around 80% of cases the PKGBUILDs in the UNSUPPORTED are very simple and can be quickly checked for sanity and malicious code by the TU team.

TUs should also check PKGBUILDs for minor mistakes, suggest corrections and improvements. The TU should endeavor to confirm that all pkgs follow the Arch Packaging Guidelines/Standards and in doing so share their skills with other package builders in an effort to raise the standard of package building across the distro.

TUs are also in an excellent position to document recommended practices.

"Flag Safe" guidelines
There is new functionality in the AUR that will allow TUs to mark pkgs as checked. However, users are still responsible for checking the PKGBUILDs themselves.

The TU and [community], Guidelines for Package Maintenance
Accessing the Repo
Follow these instructions for uploading/modifying packages once you have become a TU:

Install the "aurtools" package. Make sure you read the AURtools Tutorial

You will need to email your the output of "htpasswd -n" to whoever is in charge of the AUR CVS repo ( Paul Mattal = paul@mattal.com ). It comes with Apache.

htpasswd -n <userid>

Run the following commands to checkout the AUR CVS:

export CVSROOT=":pserver:<userid>@cvs.archlinux.org:/home/cvs-community"
cvs login
cvs co community

To add a new package:

cvs add <directory>
cd <directory>
cvs add PKGBUILD

Make a commit:

cvs commit

To upload a binary package:

Please note that AUR password is to be used with tupkg (NOT the CVS password)
tupkg --user <userid> --password <aur-password> <packagefile.pkg.tar.gz>

After uploading a package and committing the build files, tag the files with this command:

cvs tag -cFR CURRENT <newpackagebuilddir>
Package changes become available on every full and half of hour. Verify everything was uploaded properly, then select the newly added or updated package in the web interface and set yourself as the maintainer.

Note: Steps 5-7 can be run with communitypkg in one command as mentioned below in the AURtools tutorial.

Note: In some cases, especially for community packages, an x86_64 TU might bump the pkgrel by .1 (and not +1). This indicates that the change to the PKGBUILD is x86_64 specific and i686
maintainers should not rebuild the package for i686. When the TU decides to bump the pkgrel , it should be done with the usual increment of +1. However, a previous pkgrel=2.1 must
not become pkgrel=3.1 when bumped by the TU and must instead be pkgrel=3. In a nutshell, leave dot (.) releases exclusive to the x86_64 TU's to avoid confusion.

Uploading packages to x86_64-version of community
* step 1 till 5 are the same as mentioned above.
* when using tupkg add "--port 1035" to the list of parameters
* Tag the package with "cvs tag -cFR CURRENT-64"

Adopting Packages
A TU may adopt any package at any time. But because the TU's time is
limited, he should try to only adopt popular packages. The voting
mechanism in the AUR allows a TU to quickly gauge which packages users
want.

A maintainer should adopt his selected package(s) via the web interface. That maintainer is then responsible for bug fixes and new version updates. Packages must be properly cleaned and fixed after adoption.

Disowning packages
You can disown packages by choosing "Disown Packages" in the AUR webinterface.
If a TU can't or doesn't want to maintain a package any longer, a
notice should be posted to the AUR Mailing List, so another TU can
maintain it. A package can still be disowned even if no other TU wants
to maintain it, but the TUs should try not to drop many packages (they
shouldn't take on more than they have time for). If a package has
become obsolete or isn't used any longer, it can be removed completely
as well.

If a package has been removed completely, it can be uploaded once again
(fresh) to UNSUPPORTED, where a regular user can maintain the package
instead of the TU.

Deleting packages from [community]
Removing a package from [community] is easy but not straightforward.
After you've removed it from community, you could re-add it to
unsupported (make sure to keep a copy!) and orphan it, for adoption by
some other user in unsupported.

To remove a package, all you really need to do is remove the CURRENT (and possibly CURRENT-64) tag
from the PKGBUILD. You do this by doing:

cvs tag -d CURRENT PKGBUILD
cvs tag -d CURRENT PKGBUILD

If you wish to remove the package materials from CVS for future
revisions (because you don't want the old stuff lying around), you can
do the following FROM THE PACKAGE'S DIRECTORY in your checked out
version of the community repo (this is very important!):

cd /path/to/<packagedirname>
cvs tag -dl CURRENT #or CURRENT-64
cvs rm -fl
cvs commit

BE VERY CAREFUL with CVS delete commands! By untagging current on the
whole repo you risk removing EVERYTHING in [community]. I've suggested
commands that hope to minimize that possibility, but there's
still danger where delete is involved. Especially note that the tag
delete takes IMMEDIATELY before committing, so be very careful.

Also, due to weirdness of CVS, actually removing the package directory
is impossible. It will still show up in a checked out version unless you set up a ~/.cvsrc
file that will help prune empty directories. The following is helpful:

cvs -q
diff -uN
rdiff -u
checkout -P
update -dP

Any TU can remove any package in [community] so keep this in mind and be
extra super careful with this ability, lest you accidentally wipe out
someone else's package.

AURtools
To help the Trusted Users with their duties, the AURtools were written based on the tupkg tool. If you are Trusted User, it is highly recommended that you use the AURtools. The AURtools Tutorial was written to help you to get used to them.
Wizzomafizzohttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=Package_Maintainers&diff=26886Package Maintainers2007-07-12T10:06:07Z
Wizzomafizzo: /* wizzomafizzo */ Adding my information.

The Trusted User (TU)
The Trusted User (TU) is a member of the community charged with
keeping the AUR in working order. He/she maintains popular packages, and
votes in administrative matters. A TU is elected from active community
members by current TUs in a democratic process. TUs are the only
members who have a final say in the direction of the AUR.

The TUs are governed using the TUbylaws

The voting
mechanism in the AUR allows a TU to quickly gage which packages users

To remove a package, all you really need to do is remove the CURRENT tag
from the PKGBUILD. You do this by doing:

cvs tag -d CURRENT PKGBUILD

If you wish to remove the package materials from CVS for future
revisions (because you don't want the old stuff lying around), you can
do the following FROM THE PACKAGE'S DIRECTORY in your checked out
version of the community repo (this is very important!):

cd /path/to/<packagedirname>
cvs tag -dl CURRENT
cvs rm -fl

It will still show up in a checked out version. This is
CVS and we have to live with it, at least for now.

Wizzomafizzohttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=Wiimote&diff=22121Wiimote2007-03-23T17:21:47Z
Wizzomafizzo:

This article will go through the basic steps required to have a working Wiimote in Linux for general use. It won't go into much detail for some steps as there are many guides already written for some parts already.

Setup
Prerequisites
* cwiid
* Wiimote

The most important piece required is Bluetooth, this must already be configured and running without the help of this guide. This should be simple enough with any guide found on the internet. The 'cwiid' package must be installed from the community repository. This package contains all libraries and programs required for basic use of the Wiimote. Lastly you will need a Wiimote, this can include (although are not required) the Nunchuk and Classic Control attachments.

cwiid
cwiid is incredibly easy to get running on any system with working Bluetooth support. Once it has been installed from the community repository you should make sure your Wiimote is detected by your Bluetooth system:

(press the 1 and 2 buttons on your Wiimote)
$ hcitool scan
Scanning ...

Mutt is a text-based mail client renowned for its powerful features. Mutt, though over a decade old, remains the mail client of choice for great number of power-users. Unfortunately, a default mutt install is plagued by complex keybindings, and a daunting amount of documentation. This guide will help the average user get mutt up and running, and begin customizing it to his/her taste.

Quick Start
What Mutt Does Not Do
Mutt is a Mail User Agent (MUA), and was written to view mail. It was not written to retrieve, send, or sort mail. It relies on external programs to do those tasks. For this wiki, we will be using getmail to retrieve our mail, procmail to sort our mail, and msmtp to send our mail.

Setting up for POP mail
Because IMAP protocol does not cache your mail locally you can skip this section.

Retrieving Mail
First install getmail. It is in the
[extra]
repository.
pacman -S getmail
Now create the directory
~/.getmail/
. Open the file
~/.getmail/getmailrc
in your favorite text editor.

Here is an example
getmailrc
used with a gmail account.

[retriever]
type = SimplePOP3SSLRetriever
server = pop.gmail.com
username = username@gmail.com
port = 995
password = password

[destination]
type = Maildir
path = ~/mail/

You can tweak this to your POP3 service's specification.

For this guide we will be storing our mail in the
maildir
format. The two main mailbox formats are
mbox
and
maildir
. The main difference between the two is that
mbox
is one file, with all of your mails and their headers stored in it, whereas a
maildir
is a directory tree. Each mail is its own file, which will often speed things up.

A
maildir
is just a folder with the folders
cur
,
new
and
tmp
in it.
mkdir -p ~/mail/{cur,new,tmp}

Now, run getmail. If it works fine, you can create a cronjob for getmail to run every n hours/minutes. Type
crontab -e
to edit cronjobs, and enter the following:
/30 * * * * /usr/bin/getmail
That will run
getmail
every 30 minutes.

Sorting Mail
Procmail is an extremely powerful sorting tool. For the purposes of this wiki, we will do some primitive sorting to get started.

First, install procmail. It is in the
[current]
repository.
pacman -S procmail
You must edit your getmailrc to pass retrieved mail to procmail.

[destination]
type = MDA_external
path = /usr/bin/procmail

Now, open up
.procmailrc
in your favorite editor. The following will sort all mail from the happy-kangaroos mailing list, and all mail from your lovey-dovey friend in their own maildirs.

MAILDIR=$HOME/mail
DEFAULT=$MAILDIR/inbox/
LOGFILE=$MAILDIR/log

:0:
* ^To: happy-kangaroos@nicehost.com
happy-kangaroos/

:0:
* ^From: loveydovey@iheartyou.net
lovey-dovey/

After you've saved your
.procmailrc
, run getmail and see if procmail succeeds in sorting your mail into the appropriate directories.

Setting up for SMTP
Whether you use POP or IMAP to recieve mail you will probably still send mail using SMTP.

Sending Mail
Msmtp is a very simple and easy to use smtp client. It is in the
[extra]
repository.
pacman -S msmtp
Open up
~/.msmtprc
in your favorite editor. The following is an example of an
.msmtprc
for a gmail account:

account default
host smtp.gmail.com
port 587
protocol smtp
auth on
from username@gmail.com
user username@gmail.com
password mypassword
tls on
tls_starttls on

Now mutt must be configured to use msmtp. Make a directory
~/.mutt/
, and open up
~/.mutt/muttrc
. The following should get you started viewing and sending mail.

set realname='Disgruntled Kangaroo'

set sendmail="/usr/bin/msmtp"

set edit_headers=yes
set folder=~/mail
set mbox=+mbox
set spoolfile=+inbox
set record=+sent
set postponed=+drafts
set mbox_type=Maildir

mailboxes +inbox +lovey-dovey +happy-kangaroos

Now, startup mutt. You should see all the mail in
~/mail/inbox
. Press
m
to compose mail (it will use the editor defined by your
EDITOR
environment variable. If this variable is not set, type
export EDITOR=/path/to/yourfavorite/editor
. For testing purposes, address the letter to yourself. After you have written the lovely letter, use your editor's save and exit command. You will return to mutt, which will show you information about your e-mail. Press
y
to send it. If everything works, congratulations! You can use mutt! However, realizing the true power of mutt comes with much customizing.

Customizing Mutt
Coming Soon, but until then, you can view some sample mutt configs at the Mutt Wiki.

xterminus is pretty active in the mutt community, so if you have any mutt specific questions, feel free to ask in the irc channel.
Wizzomafizzohttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=Locale&diff=15614Locale2006-10-08T16:08:14Z
Wizzomafizzo:

Configuring (adding and removing) locales is a breeze. As super user, edit
/etc/locale.gen
, uncommenting (removing "#" from the beginnings of appropriate lines) the locales you require. Then, run
locale-gen
. If you now run
locale -a
, you should see whatever those you have specified.

For your locale to come into effect, you must set an environmental variable. The easiest way to do this is by editing the
.bashrc
file in your home directory. Add the following line to this file:
export LC_ALL="locale"
For instance,
export LC_ALL="he_IL.utf8"
When you next start bash (upon reboot, for instance), the LC_ALL environmental variable will be set for you.

Configuring a proper locale can greatly enhance your Linux experience. For instance, configuring a Hebrew locale will allow you to read Hebrew messages in Gaim.

WARNING: Changing your locale to this will not grant you powers to read Hebrew!

In an attempt to give back to the Arch community I decided to write a wiki page about my laptop the Dell Latitude C600 and what I've found out about it, it's treated me well and plays fairly nicely with Linux. I would recommend it.

Much of this information has been based off of the wiki page for the Dell Latitude C600 at the Gentoo wiki and the linux-dell-laptops faq page which although old is still very good, I suggest you also read both of these if you don't find answers here.

PCMCIA Cardbus
After some configuration changes I know personally that this cardbus works perfectly.

First install pcmciautils as root with

pacman -S pcmciautils

Once installed to stop boot freezes you have to edit /etc/pcmcia/config.opts and find the line

include port 0x820-0x8ff

and comment it out. Dell likes to be special for some reason and if that range is probed at boot it will usually result in the laptop dying, I think this configuration change can be applied to most Dell laptops.

If you're compiling your own kernel remember that this is a yenta-compatible cardbus and that should be enabled in the pccard section of the kernel config.
<M> CardBus yenta-compatible bridge support

Audio
I've had absolutely no problems with audio for this laptop, if you're using the Arch stock kernel26 or beyond kernel it should work straight out of the box after it is enabled like a regular sound card.

If you're compiling your own kernel you should enable this card in the sound pci device section
<*> ESS Allegro/Maestro3

Video
Framebuffer
If you're using a stock kernel I can confirm that you can get a high resolution framebuffer by simply adding
vga=791
to your kernel's boot options for a good 1024x768 resolution. I'll leave you to find out other values to use for other resolutions but this one workd for me and is a good guideline.

Using the beyond kernel it is also quite easy to achieve extras like a background or progress bar on boot using other articles in this wiki.

If you're compiling your own kernel then you're out of luck with getting a framebuffer to work with this guide, I've not been able to find the right options and the rage128 driver causes a freeze, that being said it has to be possible some how and feel free to add your solution here.

Xorg
I always use xorgconfig to generate my xorg config and it's quite easy to get xorg going at first, a general rule is to use the ati and rage128 drivers for it. The Gentoo wiki article has links to this xorg.conf which has some great additions you can add for your video sections. One thing to add is that contrary what the config says this laptop can get a top resolution of 1400x1050 for me at least.

Network
Ethernet
This works perfectly straight out of the box without any configuration using any of the stock kernels. Not much to say about it.

If you're compiling your own kernel remember to enable this card in the net device section
<*> 3c590/3c900 series (592/595/597) "Vortex/Boomerang" support

Winmodem
Apparently this laptop has a 3Com Corporation Mini PCI 56k Winmodem but I'm yet to get it working and doubt it would. I also have no need or desire to get it working anyway.

Please anyone feel free to add to this section how you got it working if you have.

Touchpad
This laptop has a great touchpad and has lots of features if used in conjunction with the synaptics driver for xorg. You can install it with

pacman -S synaptics

and use this in your xorg config's mouse section

Driver "synaptics"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Emulate3Buttons"
Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"

This adds all sorts neat features like a "scroll wheel" on the right, tap-to-click, tapping in corners for right-clicking, middle-clicking etc. and using the bottom as another scroll wheel for things like back and forward buttons in Firefox. I have this disabled with the HorizScrollDelta line as it gets really annoying.

The little joystick in the center of the keyboard also works perfectly.

Battery and Power Saving
APM
I would suggest using APM instead of ACPI as it's easier, provides a longer battery time and most importantly works out of the box and even gives you a working suspend.

Enabling APM with a stock kernel is very easy, you can turn it off by adding
acpi=off
to the kernel boot options and next boot you should have working APM.

If your APM happens to be buggy or causes crashes you may need to update your BIOS which can be done using this section of the Gentoo guide.

You will also probably need apmd which you can install with
pacman -S apmd
and then adding "apmd" to your daemons list in rc.conf

ACPI
I know this laptop is perfectly capable of using ACPI but I prefer to use APM so I don't have any information to give. If you want to test it out yourself install acpid and try looking around for some guides for it. Please add any working scripts you might find to this guide.

Volume Keys and Fans
If you've wondered how you can get those volume keys working or even how to control the fans you're in luck, the i8k module and utils are perfectly compatible with the laptop. Make sure i8k is loaded with
modprobe i8k
and if you use your own kernel make sure you compile in "Dell Laptop Support".

Next install i8kutils with
pacman -S i8kutils
and you're set to go. You can refer to the documentation for i8kutils on how to script the volume keys and control the fans.
Wizzomafizzo
