This category should be split

I was wondering why swap is in Category:File systems, when technically speaking, it is not a file system. Of course I couldn't find any better cat for it.

Looking closely, there are much more pages that don't really belong into this category: Partitioning, LVM, Securely wipe disk, Hdparm, ...

There should be another, more general category between Category:System administration and Category:File systems. Since categories can't be "moved", the name must be good the first time. Is "Block devices" good enough?

Yeah, this category is a bit of a catchall at the moment, but what should be moved out doesn't seem to have much in common, except for operating on block devices as you say. Maybe once the extraneous articles will have been moved to "Category:Block devices" it will be clearer whether and how to split them further/better; also, hopefully not too many articles will end up there, thus making it easier to recategorize them if we come up with a better idea. -- Kynikos (talk) 05:07, 13 July 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't know what to do with umask and File permissions and attributes, perhaps they should just stay here. Perhaps File recovery and similar could be categorized only under Category:System recovery? This category could just link to it from text.
There is also Category:Storage, which is categorized under Category:Hardware. I'm not sure if SW/HW is clear enough distinction here, creating "Category:Block devices" would probably cause most articles to fall into both categories. We could also use Category:Storage instead of creating "Category:Block devices" and categorize Category:File systems also into Category:Storage (or just link to each other from text?).

Do we want to plan more carefully? Below is the current list of articles in Category:File systems: let's move them where they fit best until we're happy :) (I don't have time to keep editing right now, will resume in some hours at least). -- Kynikos (talk) 03:39, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
To answer your post: since file permissions and attributes are stored in the file system, I think umask and File permissions and attributes can naturally stay in this category, unless we manage to create a more specific subcategory. By the way, the idea was to put "Cat:File systems" as a child of "Cat:Block devices", right? Or did you intend to make them siblings?
About File recovery, it could be seen related to file systems, as recovering deleted files is an operation done on file systems, and recovering files because the file system in their device got corrupted/lost is still aimed at fixing a file system, however Category:System recovery could be already enough as you say, maybe we'll be able to judge better after moving the extraneous articles into "Cat:Block devices".
About Category:Storage, it's indeed rather hard, but I think it's still worth trying to make a distinction between articles that are focused on interacting with some particular hardware and those that are focused on interacting with what is stored on that hardware, regardless of the used hardware. By the way, I'd move Greyhole into the new "Cat:Block devices".

I have noticed Category:Storage only after my original post, so at that point there were two different suggestions/questions and I clearly didn't separate them clearly enough, sorry about that.
Plan A: create "Category:Block devices" between Category:System administration and Category:File systems
Plan B: use the existing Category:Storage instead of "Category:Block devices" from A, so that Category:File systems would have two parents (Category:System administration and Category:Storage)
Plan B was more of a brainstorming and brings more problems, so let's stick with plan A. As you say, limiting Category:Storage strictly to hardware-based topics should work, we'll see later on...

reminder: Master Boot Record should be categorized the same as GUID Partition Table (it is not currently in cat:File systems) -- Lahwaacz (talk) 22:17, 15 July 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
