Suggestions

Sorry, but the section about multimedia keys is not clear at all. What should I do with those scripts? Qeek 14:04, 19 June 2008 (EDT)

Also of note: installing OSSv4 disables the kernel modules for sound that ALSA uses. Can someone detail how this happens and how to restore the modules after removing OSS and installing ALSA? I had to reinstall the kernel to get the modules back, so if that is the case, let's add a section for removing OSS and going back to ALSA.bloodniece

  • I don't think it does bloodniece, must be related to some other problem. There would be no reason to do.--Gen2ly 15:39, 22 June 2009 (EDT)
  • The OSS .install defines an uninstall procedure that automatically runs when the package is uninstalled. Including re-placing any ALSA modules. Perhaps you could state that OSS conflicts with ALSA and that if you need to run ALSA later that the OSS package must be removed? --Maskawanian 02:05, 18 July 2009 (EDT)

Maskawanians' re-organized page can be found here. --Gen2ly

Sorry if I've missed something, but I don't think you add oss to the modules array, just the daemon array. Is this right? --Tim

Yes, it does... fixed. --Gen2ly 11:51, 13 December 2009 (EST)

Modifications

Ok, I went through most of the page and hopefully didn't miss anything big (and didn't mess anything up). But I don't really use OSS (and the OSS forum and wiki seem to be down) so I have a few questions:

  • if anyone is using the oss-hg: does using the oss unit file work like that? (theoretically it should)
  • in the Tips and tricks section: are the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 SB1090 USB and ALSA emulation sections still relevant (especially the Sound Blaster one, seems out of date). In any case, they're badly worded and I didn't understand what they do.
  • same for the Settings for a specific driver. It was written in first person and didn't really detail the actual problem. From what I can tell OSS didn't recognize the headphones being plugged in, but it should definitely be made clearer.

So, if anyone could look over these and provide some information, it would be grand. Thanks. :D -- Alexfikl (talk) 15:50, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Emulation

Currently the article contains an section about "ALSA emulation", as it is kinda bad to start with the older system and emulate the newer one, shouldn't we add a more clear reference to emulating the old "OSS" using the newer PulseAudio, PipeWire, ALSA, ...? Probably what most people are looking for is how to run some old software that expects OSS on their system, so this way around is probably the desired configuration anyway...

Feel free to add it, this page is roughly 10 year out of date as far as content goes... --Erus Iluvatar (talk) 14:28, 22 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
