Additional info while installing on VMWare player 6.0.1

I had to do a few additional things while installing on VMWare player wrt the Official VMWare tools. The kernel version was 3.12 and vmware player was 6.0.1. To highlight the points:

  • I did not get the tools ISO with my VMware player installation and had to source it from one of the vmware websites.
  • The source for the vmci module had to be replaced with one which I found from the vmware forums in the tools .
  • A patch had to be applied vmhgfs module source

If someone could let me know if any of this info would be qualify to go into the wiki then I can add them in. It might help someone trying to install on VMWare player. Nsmathew (talk) 07:31, 29 November 2013 (UTC) nsmathewReply[reply]

vsock and vmw_vsock_vmci_transport drivers

What is the purpose of those drivers and when are they needed?

According to this Ubuntu manual page it looks like they probably get loaded automatically anyway if needed: vmsock

Disabling PC speaker.

Add 'mks.noBeep = "TRUE"' to general [1] or guest config. --Althathwe (talk) 17:21, 8 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copy / Paste

It should be mentioned in the installation section that gtkmm3 is required for copy and paste / drag and drop to function. --TheChickenMan (talk) 17:34, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

X11 and tools.conf

I got tired if manually adjusting guest resolution for AwesomeWM, but I believe it applies to X11 more generally. Part of creating github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/pull/382 to fix github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/issues/265 required updating tools.conf for debug level logging. So, we may want to add a section covering /etc/vmware-tools/tools.conf.example. If allow-x11-backend=true support is merged, it would be worth mentioning along with some existing configurations. I'm thinking that adding coverage regarding Autofit Guest for X11 and at least a mention that tools.conf exists would enrich the article. Do you think any particular part of tools.conf would be of interest? Any thoughts on X11 with respect to open-vm-tools? Comrumino (talk) 09:31, 25 October 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
