btrfs encrypt

Hi, gleaning recent changes I see your sandbox work and want to drop a thought: A long time passed and we still miss a Dm-crypt/Encrypting an entire system#LUKS on software RAID scenario section. Most benefits for readers would be to use standard mdadm for the section, but perhaps in conjunction with a btrfs root (btrfs we don't have an example for either yet). A while back I also thought about adding one with an encrypted btrfs raid1 (Talk:Dm-crypt/Encrypting an entire system#LVM on LUKS on LVM), but never worked on it and partly that was due to standard raid more universally useful for the article. .. just in case, roll the thought. --Indigo (talk) 15:22, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

+1, my impression is that User:Rdeckard/Sandbox is being thought as a stand-alone article, but I think it would be better to structure it as a new Dm-crypt/Encrypting an entire system scenario, and link to it from Btrfs. — Kynikos (talk) 02:07, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's a good idea. I'll have to think about formatting for that. Thanks! - Rdeckard (talk) 11:15, 24 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've just added Dm-crypt/Encrypting an entire system#Btrfs subvolume layout with LUKS. I'm working on a multi-device btrfs one, but there are a couple of things I'm looking into a little bit. - Rdeckard (talk) 17:21, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Let me point you to an article regarding btrfs raid: Have a read of the headings Self-healing redundant arrays and Online balancing. Since I read that article I know my primary desktop will be using btrfs multidevice when I finally set it up again (it is a debian machine though, so I can not help much to that effect). --Indigo (talk) 09:02, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Going to close this. It's been about 3 years - not going to pursue this. -- Rdeckard (talk) 21:46, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

qutebrowser and Skype Web

Hi! I just saw https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=Qutebrowser&diff=500194&oldid=496465 but it works fine with the default UA for me. Are you using QtWebKit? - The Compiler (talk) 18:37, 30 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm using webengine (latest qutebrowser), but now I can't seem to use Skype online no matter the user-agent (default or otherwise), while this morning I was able to use it. I keep getting "To make Skype calls, please allow Google Chrome access to your camera and microphone.". I do get prompted for permission to use the microphone which I say yes to before that message pops up. Something else must be at play here, so I'm going to remove my edit to the page. -- Rdeckard (talk) 19:24, 30 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Package cache

Hi, I added a part to get rid of most 404 error messages when using darkhttpd as a read-only package cache, and you reverted my changes. Could you explain why? Have you tried the change I recommended? Is there a problem with it? Jfcg (talk) 11:43, 27 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Jfcg, thanks for contributing to the wiki. I reverted the changes [1] because there were a few style issues. You should use the # prompt to indicate commands that require root permission instead of writing out sudo (Help:Style#Command line text). Also don't show basic pacman commands (like how to ugprade) (Help:Style#Official packages).
More subjectively I thought the additions had more to do with darkhttpd than pacman and so felt a little out of scope, but I primarily reverted the changes due to the style issues above. I agree with you that the current phrasing needs to be changed since it is very vague about the 404 and cache issues. Feel free to address the issues above and keep contributing! Thanks again. -- Rdeckard (talk) 22:30, 27 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

SSH keys

When you're deleting half the SSH keys article in two steps [2] [3] you'll need to come up with a much better argument than "reword and consolidate". I'm not sure why I have to keep reminding maintainers that even they must follow ArchWiki:Contributing#The_3_fundamental_rules. Even more so than usual - it's you guys setting the norm for other users. -- Alad (talk) 16:32, 4 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Got it. Thanks. -- Rdeckard (talk) 17:27, 4 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Pacman orphan log hook

Hi. In 2018, you edited the pacman#Querying_package_databases article and added a tip to list orphan packages post-transaction. However, recently, a change was made to Pacman/Tips_and_tricks#Removing_unused_packages_(orphans) and it includes an AUR package that does the exact same thing.

I followed your tip and I created this simple hook:

[Trigger]
Operation = Install
Operation = Upgrade
Operation = Remove
Type = Package
Target = *
[Action]
Description = List orphans
When = PostTransaction
Exec = /usr/bin/bash -c "/usr/bin/pacman -Qtd || /usr/bin/echo '=> None found.'"

Since they both do the same thing, I think we should only keep one of these separate tips (but in the main article and not in Pacman#Tips_and_tricks). Which do you think is better to keep in the Wiki? Your hook or the AUR package? Both do the same thing, I'm just asking for your input before removing one of them. Cont999 (talk) 21:30, 6 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I merged the tips to Pacman/Tips and tricks#Removing unused packages (orphans) for now. If you want to remove something, it should be the AUR package which is unnecessarily cluttered and prevents easy modification of the command (e.g. -t vs -tt). — Lahwaacz (talk) 05:57, 13 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
