Setup Issues

Most things on the Acer Aspire One 722 work more or less out of the box, as long as you do what the Beginners Guide says to do. There are however some special steps required.

Video

The AO722 uses the xf86-video-ati driver, which can be installed with pacman.

Wired and Wireless Networking

Read Wireless Setup. One special issue is that the bcma module conflicts with brcmsmac and needs to be blacklisted. See the discussion here.

Audio

Initially audio doesn't work at all except for beeping. The problem can be fixed by opening /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf and replacing every instance of "card 0" with "card 1". (Taken from this discussion in the forums.)

There seems to be no way to make the 722 sense a headphone or speaker jack. There is a workaround involving a small bash script that allows switching between headphones and speakers. The first thing needed for the workaround is the 'hda-verb' utility program, available here. Download a tarball, untar it, compile it with make, and put the resulting hda-verb binary somewhere. (You'll need to put the path in the script.)

Here is the script. (0x19 is the node/pin/whatever ID of the headphone jack (found using hda analyzer) and 0x1f that of the speakers.)

Run the script as root (you can do this using sudo bash {script path}), and give it either h or s as an argument to switch to headphones or speakers. Sometimes the command must be run again if a new audio program is started. (Taken from this discussion in the forums.)

Dual Boot

See Windows and Arch Dual Boot for general information. Note that this netbook does not come with recovery CDs. If an attempt to set up dual boot goes awry and you can't boot the machine at all, or can't boot into Windows, you can restore the original Windows configuration by booting into /dev/sda1, the recovery partition, as if it were an ordinary Windows installation. The recovery program says it will wipe the whole disk but will only wipe the partition on which Windows resides. (You can install grub from the Arch installation media onto a thumbdrive and take it from there.)
