Acer Aspire 5745PG

Introduction

Same laptop as the Acer Aspire 5745G, but this one has an integrated (USB-connected) touch screen. Everything seems to work fine except for:

  • SD card reader: Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't
  • Touch Screen: Explained below
  • Brightness increasing-decreasing: In gnome-shell one strike of the keys increases/decreases two levels of brigthness. One corresponds to the Operating System responding to the key, while the other is because of the BIOS responding as well. This can be solved by disabling GnomeShell brigthness controls or by using the following commands to increase/decrease and setting them up to a keyboard shortcurt:
xbacklight -steps 1 -inc 20
xbacklight -steps 1 -dec 20

Graphics

Starting from BIOS version 1.15, enabling discrete graphics (nVidia) through the BIOS Setup Menu is impossible, since the option is disabled. This makes the nVidia card to behave like the ones with Optimus Techonology do, and though optimus is not supported in linux, there is a way to make use of the card, and that is by installing and configuring Bumblebee, which will transfer render orders to the card and direct the output to the screen thorugh VirtualGL.

Using FN+Left when in intel graphics and VGA connected changes between screen modes (clone, right-of, etc.)

Networking

Wi-Fi and Ethernet connection work just fine, though you will have to set wi-fi up. Start by loading the new atheros module:

# modprobe ath9k

Bring the wlan0 interface up:

# ifconfig wlan0 up

Associate the interface with a network (be sure to put "s:" before the key if it is given in ASCII and not HEX):

# iwconfig wlan0 essid "MY_ESSID" key "MY_KEY"

Set channel mode to auto:

# iwconfig wlan0 channel auto

Acquire IP's and connect through DCHP:

# dhcpcd wlan0

You should do this everytime you log in, unless you start some kind of daemon or script: in GNOME networkmanager is useful.

Battery issues

Battery problems we're fixed when BIOS version v1.15 was released. Before that, one could not see the amount of battery left in the device nor any kind of information related to it.
