Exact hardware model

Acer Aspire (TimelineX) 3830TG

Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz

NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M

750 GB HDD

Atheros wifi (AR9287) b/g/n

(Probably some of these issues only for Arch Linux, e.g. on Ubuntu handling automatically, (Ubuntu is great, but too fat for me) )

Really issues, hardware problems

Sound card issue

There is no sound, however snd modules loaded on kernel. (I am working on it. There are some workaround...)

Screen backlight issue

Add kernel option acpi_osi=Linux

  • Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst
  • Find your system menu entry, and add acpi_osi=Linux kernel option

Mine menu entry looks like:

title Arch Linux
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda7 ro acpi_osi=Linux
initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img
  • reboot and pray

Note: tested with integrated Intel GPU only

But still an issue that I cannot set brightness value from software (from sysfs), only Fn + Left/Right arrows working.

GPU switch issue

At the moment I turned NVIDIA GPU off from BIOS, later I will provide some info about switching. Until then you can check on Bumblebee

Lighter issues

See Wireless Setup.

CPU frequency scaling

  • install cpufrequtils (if you want to change it from console)
  • modprobe acpi_cpufreq
  • cpufreq-info and cpufreq-set is your friend

(case of Core i5: only two cores, both hyper-threaded. It means there will be four processor device.)

(personal note: I set to 800 MHz for every device (0,1,2,3), but there were no big decrement in /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state at present rate.)

TODO: set automatically to ondemand if AC online, and powersave (or conservative) if running on battery
