Description

Audacious is an advanced fork of Beep Media Player. It is free, lightweight, based on GTK2 and is focused on audio quality and supporting a wide range of audio codecs. Audacious is extensible through third-party plugins.

  • Large amount of audio codecs supported (and even more with xmp plugin),
  • PulseAudio, ALSA, OSS, Crossfade output (also file and null),
  • WAV, Vorbis, Mp3, FLAC transcoding,
  • Sound effects,
  • Visualization,

  • Streaming support

Installation

Audacious 1.5.1 is available from official repository. To install it, use Pacman:

pacman -Sy audacious

However, Audacious 2 released, so you can install a newer version from AUR: audacious2.

Plugin package is required for normal work, too: audacious2-plugins.

Audtool

Audacious is shipped with powerful management tool called Audtool. Audtool could be used to retrieve information or to control the player.

For example, to retrieve current song title or artist you can use:

audtool current-song
audtool current-song-tuple-data artist

There are also functions to control playback, to manipulate playlist, equalizer and main window. For the whole option list see

audtool --help

Note: for Audacious2 audtool appliation is called audtool2.

New UI in Audacious 2

Audacious 2 has an option to use alternative UI's. To use new GTK user interface, launch audacious2 with

audacious2 -i newui

Standard UI skins

Audacious supports Winamp classic skins, so you can use any of them with Audacious.
