Core / Extra Package cleanup

Feel free to edit the table below and up the "yes" or "no" columns to indicate how you feel about moving this package to unsupported/community

Proposition

We should try to have "one app per task". One might be a tad extreme, but we should at least strive to minimise the number of apps. To further explain: we don't need 20 text editors, and 30 bittorrent clients, and all that jazz. These apps are fine, but could be better supported in [community] or [unsupported].

Process will probably need to be added on top of this to see when and how we should swap out these apps. For example, if we have elinks in there, and a much better application comes a long, we should probably figure out a clear path to push elinks down and pull the new application upward. (elinks is just an example)

Goals

  • A cleanup of the core and extra repositories
  • Allow "core" to be a more core set of packages that are crucial to the distribution
  • Extra will contain auxiliary packages that are non-critical
  • Reduce the packaging work load of the developers
  • TUs are easier to appoint and find, it makes sense to move some of the workload to the community repo

The List (original cleanup effort, vote-based)

CHECK WHERE THE PACKAGE IS GOING BEFORE MARKING UP/DOWN

Please increment the last two columns as an unofficial "vote" mechanism

Package Cleanup - Alphabetical Order Please!
Package New location Reason for move Yes, move it! Wait, I like it!
achessclock unsupported home page disappeared, no source found 2 0
bitlbee community orphaned and out of date in [extra], a TU could maintain it 3 1
bittorrent community better alternatives 16 3
firestarter community low usage 12 2
fluxbox community support openbox only 12 12
*fonts community desktop related, unless bitmap fonts (terminus) 21 4
fte unsupported yet another text editor 4 0
*games* community (arch-games?) except DE games 24 1
gnash-kde unsupported might be of no use because I doubt konqueror4 can load kde3 plugins, see https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?22104 2 0
kdetv unsupported site is down and development has stopped 2 0
kiosktool unsupported (broken; no new version available) 2 0
klogic unsupported website down 2 0
kkbswitch unsupported latest version from 2005; would need kdebase3 2 0
knetload unsupported old, dates from 2004. Maybe there is an equivalent in kde4. 2 0
kradio unsupported old and broken 2 0
libkexiv unsupported only needed by showimg 2 0
libivusal-bmp unsupported page moved - See http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9026 for details 2 0
metatheme unsuported last update from 2005, broken 2 0
mozillaqs unsuported development stopped; imho useless app 3 0
ogle unsuported undeveloped 13 0
r community outdate/ rather unused 10 4
schafkopf unsupported last release was in 2006. needs kdegames 3 to build. 11 3
showimg unsupported development has stopped and does not compile. latest new is from 2006 3 0
windowmaker-extra unsupported should go along with wmmaker 9 0
wm* unsupported same reason 8 0

Comment from codemac: don't remove R. It may be relatively low use/not alot of updates.. but it's just like any older language (fortran, etc) that may not get a lot of use right now, but not having it is worse. R is extremely useful if you are in any kind of statistical job/school.

The List (pkgstats [extra] low-usage packages)

NB: See also User:Allan/Extra_Repo_and_Pkgstats (Should be merged with the following table)

Note: there are a few mega-groups of packages in the below list. These include kde-l10n-*, koffice-l10n-*, fortune-mod-*, several mono packages, texlive-*, and xpdf-* (l10n packages).
