==Co je to GNOME?==
+

+
[http://www.gnome.org/ GNOME] je projekt poskytující dvě věci: desktopové prostředí, intuitivní a atraktivní desktop pro koncové uživatele a GNOME vývojová platforma, rozsáhlá základna pro tvorbu aplikací integrovaných do prostředí.

==Jak nainstalovat GNOME?==
+

+
Pro nainstalování základu GNOME napište následující příkaz:
+
pacman -S gnome
+

+
Pro nainstalování rozšířeného GNOME (doporučeno) napište následující příkaz:
+
pacman -S gnome-extra
+

+
Pro spuštění správných procesů po bootu editujte soubor /etc/rc.conf a přidejte "portmap", "fam", "dbus" and "hal" do DAEMONS=() řádky.
+

+
==Spouštění GNOME==
+

+
Pro start GNOME z konzole napište:
+
gnome-session
+

+
Pokud přidáte do $HOME/.xinitrc řádku:
+
exec gnome-session
+

+
Pozn: GNOME 2.14 potřebuje podporu dbus proto nahradte řádek exec tímto:
+
exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session
+

+
GNOME se spustí jakmile napíšete:
+
startx
+

+
==GDM (GNOME Display Manager)==
+

+
Pokud chcete grafické přihlašování musíte nainstalovat [http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/ GDM]. Pro jeho instalaci jen napište:
+
pacman -S gdm
+

+
Aby se gdm spouštělo hned po startu musíte zapsat "gdm" do seznamu démonů v /etc/rc.conf
+

+
If you are used to using the '''$HOME/.xinitrc''' file to pass arguments to the x server when it is started, such as '''xmodmap''' or '''xsetroot''', you should note that you can add the same commands to the '''$HOME/.xprofile''' file. My .xprofile looks like this:
+

+

+
#!/bin/sh
+

+
#
+
# ~/.xprofile
+
#
+
# Executed by gdm at login
+
#
+

+
xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5"  #set mouse buttons up correctly
+
xsetroot -solid black #sets the background to black
+

+

+

==Misc tips and tricks==

===Get the Desktop -> Lock Screen to work===
+
#Go to Desktop -> Preferences -> Screensaver
+
#Enable one or more screensavers
+
#Lock Screen will now start your screensaver and require your password to stop it
+

+
===Nautilus===
+
Want to get to a certain path but can't because of the spatial view? Just type:
+

control + L

+

+
====browser mode====
+
tired of spatial view? then start gconf-editor then browse to apps/nautilus/preferences and change the value of "always_use_browser" (it's a yes/no value and should be visible as a checkbox or say "false", for the later change the value to "true"
+

+
===Add/Edit GDM Sessions===
+
To add or edit sessions to GDM:
+
The GDM configuration file is located at /opt/gnome/etc/gdm/gdm.conf. The gdm.conf file links to the desktop/window manager sessions in the folder /etc/X11/sessions. The sessions are in the format *.desktop.

+
To add a new session
+
1.Copy an existing *.desktop file to use as a template for a new session:
+

cd /etc/X11/sessions
+
cp enlightenment.desktop waimea.desktop

+
2. Modify the template *.desktop file to open the required window manager:
+

nano waimea.desktop

+
Alternatively, you can open the new session in KDM. This creates the *.desktop file. Then return to using GDM and the new session will be available.
+

+
===/etc/hosts and the loopback device===
+
If your gnome applications seem sluggish and gnome hangs at start-up after killing the previous session, it's likely you haven't set your /etc/hosts file correctly and enabled the loopback device.

Make sure your /etc/rc.conf file includes:
HOSTNAME="YOURHOSTNAME"
+
lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
+
INTERFACES=(lo)

+
and your /etc/hosts file includes:
127.0.0.1      localhost      YOURHOSTNAME
Then run "/bin/hostname YOURHOSTNAME" and "/usr/sbin/ifconfig lo up" as root.
