Generally started from /etc/inittab to allow login on a terminal.

Agetty

Agetty. Part of Template:Package Official package.

Agetty modifies the TTY settings while waiting for a login so that newlines are not translated to CR–LFs. This tends to cause a "staircase effect" for messages printed to the console (printed by programs started by Init for instance).

Fgetty

Fgetty. Package: Template:Package Official. Derived from Mingetty. Does not cause the "staircase effect". The patched fgetty-pam is currently required for PAM (incl. SHA-2) support.
