Rsyslog

Rsyslog is an alternative logger to syslog-ng and offers many benefits over syslog-ng. Rsyslog is also the prefered logger for the latest versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, as well as many other Linux distributions. Many of rsyslog's benefits over syslog-ng can be found here: [1].

Enabling Rsyslog

Enabling rsyslog is very straight forward, first install rsyslog, the package is available in the community repository:

pacman -Sy rsyslog

Then start rsyslog and stop syslog-ng (unless for some starnge reason you want 2 log daemons running):

/etc/rc.d/rsyslogd start

Finially add rsyslogd to the DAEMONS line in your rc.conf, and disable/remove syslog-ng:

DAEMONS=( !syslog-ng rsyslogd ... )

Now you have migrated over to rsyslog! --Teancum 18:40, 8 January 2009 (EST)
