Archiving and compression are two distinct things

Hey, this is looking pretty good. Archiving and compression are however two distinct things, which is why I propose to:

  • rename the page to Archiving and compression tools
  • update Differentiation and move it to the intro
  • split up the Comparison section into Archiving only, Compression only and Archiving and compression.

Thank you for your suggestions and continuing help! I'm struggling with the proper scope & segmentation, but will add more content for later revision. SHSauler (talk) 13:51, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
I might add too much detail in the overview charts, e.g. all possible file extensions. If you consider this is too much, I'd opt for overview charts at the bottom like Wikipedia does it on their comparison site.SHSauler (talk) 21:37, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

Manual pages

I think the tables could use man page links for the commands (e.g. like in Core utilities#Basic commands). -- nl6720 (talk) 15:29, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

Thanks! Added links according to your suggestion. Only concern is that it gets a bit too link-y now with wiki, package and man. SHSauler (talk) 19:40, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
Yeah I think it's too much. I'd prefer to extend the Usage comparison sections as man pages are also linked there. --Larivact (talk) 19:49, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
Only realized your logic there after adding it. Apologies, will fix when adding usage samples. SHSauler (talk) 20:00, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
Actually now that I have separated the usage comparison tables, I think we should keep the man page links in the main tables.--Larivact (talk) 08:04, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

Merge done

I finally merged the remaining tools from List of applications/Utilities#Archiving and compression tools.

This page really grew quick (now nearly 10KB) and has become a great resource.

I'd like to thank SHSauler for the idea and contribution.
