Javadoc section out of date
Hi, just installed latest eclipse. It crashed all the time, so I did a bit research:
+

http://www.eclipse.org/swt/faq.php#browserlinux
+
The section on javadoc is datedOpenjdk is the default install now, and the wiki references Sun. The default eclipse install points to the Oracle download location for javadoc. Not sure if this works with openjdk yet.
  Eclipse 3.6.x and newer:
+
Mozilla 1.4 GTK2 - 1.7.x GTK2
+
XULRunner 1.8.x - 1.9.2.x
+
WebKitGTK+ 1.2.0 and newer

Here the solution:

+
since gnome3 the webkit library name changed from libwebkit-1.0.so to libwebkitgtk-1.0.so, so I did
+
# cd /usr/lib
+
# ln -s libwebkitgtk-1.0.so libwebkit-1.0.so.2
+
and
+
-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.UseWebKitGTK=true
+
works again

::Well this workaround has just been added: what now? I'm not against it, although it could be explained much better and report a link to the forum thread. -- Kynikos 05:43, 14 May 2011 (EDT)

This section was added in 2009: I would replace it with a link to Java, agree?

Is this trick still needed? If not I'll remove it. (Or move it to Java?)

Use plugins manager as root
+
After upgrading to Eclipse 3.7 from 3.6.2 I apparently lost all my user-installed plugins, because they get stored in ~/.eclipse/[version-dependent-folder]. I would recommend to manage plugins as root user with:
+

+
gksu eclipse
+

+
This installs them safely in /usr/share/eclipse/plugins/.
+

+
Does somebody think this can be dangerous in any way and I shouldn't add it as a warning? I can't think of an alternative except using official/AUR packages.

Javadoc section out of date

The section on javadoc is dated. Openjdk is the default install now, and the wiki references Sun. The default eclipse install points to the Oracle download location for javadoc. Not sure if this works with openjdk yet.
