FONT_MAP does not set the key map. 
  
There was a lot of misinformation inserted since my last edits. Instead of reverting months' worth of diddling about, I'll cross post directly from the fontconfig manual for reference. [[User:Self|self]] 13:49, 8 May 2010 (EDT)

A slight expansion on "ttf-ms-fonts-lic - Cleaner alternative to the above" would be appreciated. That phrase doesn't really explain anything and I'm still trying to find out what the actual difference is.

‘Set the proper key map’?

FONT_MAP does not set the key map.

I put the following code into /etc/profile.d/locale.sh:

(case "${LANG}" in
pl_*) FONT=lat2-16;;
*) let 0;;
esac && setfont $FONT)

This allows the user to use a different locale than the system default. Of course, the list of supported languages must be extended.
