The topic is probably a common search item for users. I think it could easily stand on its own, just for that reason, even before my additions.    --[[User:Thisoldman|Thisoldman]] 13:01, 22 November 2009 (EST)

There was a lot of misinformation inserted since my last edits. Instead of reverting months' worth of diddling about, I'll cross post directly from the fontconfig manual for reference. [[User:Self|self]] 13:49, 8 May 2010 (EDT)

This allows the user to use a different locale than the system default.  Of course, the list of supported languages must be extended.

A slight expansion on "ttf-ms-fonts-lic - Cleaner alternative to the above" would be appreciated. That phrase doesn't really explain anything and I'm still trying to find out what the actual difference is.

‘Set the proper key map’?

FONT_MAP does not set the key map.

I put the following code into /etc/profile.d/locale.sh:

(case "${LANG}" in
pl_*) FONT=lat2-16;;
*) let 0;;
esac && setfont $FONT)

This allows the user to use a different locale than the system default. Of course, the list of supported languages must be extended.

Is xset fp rehash required?

When installing local fonts, this page suggests adding the following the .xinitrc file:

xset +fp /usr/share/fonts/local
xset fp rehash

My understanding is that xset fp rehash is only required to reload the font path on an active X session, therefore not needed in the .xinitrc file.
