What's the difference between the kernel and the initial ramdisk environment?

My question is about the Early KMS Start section, which says and I quote:

Rebuild your kernel image (refer to the mkinitcpio article for more info):

# mkinitcpio -p <name of your kernel preset; e.g. linux>

Now, what actually gets rebuilt? mkinitcpio page says that "mkinitcpio is a Bash script to create initial ramdisk environment". Now I am confused and I vaguely understand the difference between the kernel and the initial ramdisk environment. All3fox (talk) 09:53, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

See Mkinitcpio#Overview for an explanation of what the initial ramdisk environment (initramfs CPIO image) is. Kernel != kernel image. Confusing, I know :-) -- Karol (talk) 11:18, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
