I think xdg-open info should be kept here. Move xdg-utils related info from Default Applications here instead merge this page to Default Applications. Default Applications is more general. Many desktop environment do not need to use xdg-open to set default applications. -- Fengchao (talk) 05:27, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Move suggestion

Maybe this page could be moved to Xdg-utils? xdg-open is in xdg-utils, and this page also describes xdg-mime, run-mailcap and mimetype... -- Lahwaacz (talk) 09:40, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Could make sense indeed, however many parts (starting from the introduction) should be reworded as they still refer to xdg-open in particular. -- Kynikos (talk) 14:27, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

About Merge

I think xdg-open info should be kept here. Move xdg-utils related info from Default Applications here instead merge this page to Default Applications. Default Applications is more general. Many desktop environment do not need to use xdg-open to set default applications. -- Fengchao (talk) 05:27, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

While desktop environments may have file handlers of their own (gvfs-open, exo-open, etc.), and xdg-open is an intermediate for those, it boils down to the same principle: Desktop entries and MIME types.
The whole Default applications scheme is a highly complex one. Right now Default applications and xdg-open mix topics and IMO, do not clear confusion, but create it. -- Alad (talk) 01:49, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
