Move suggestion

Maybe this page could be moved to Xdg-utils? xdg-open is in xdg-utils, and this page also describes xdg-mime, run-mailcap and mimetype... -- Lahwaacz (talk) 09:40, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Could make sense indeed, however many parts (starting from the introduction) should be reworded as they still refer to xdg-open in particular. -- Kynikos (talk) 14:27, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
Idea was overtaken by merge to Default applications. Closing this one. --Indigo (talk) 04:19, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

About Merge

I think xdg-open info should be kept here. Move xdg-utils related info from Default Applications here instead merge this page to Default Applications. Default Applications is more general. Many desktop environment do not need to use xdg-open to set default applications. -- Fengchao (talk) 05:27, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

While desktop environments may have file handlers of their own (gvfs-open, exo-open, etc.), and xdg-open is an intermediate for those, it boils down to the same principle: Desktop entries and MIME types.
The whole Default applications scheme is a highly complex one. Right now Default applications and xdg-open mix topics and IMO, do not clear confusion, but create it. -- Alad (talk) 01:49, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
Please merge with this article: Default applications. Or is it enough if I will move all necessary content there?
(Andy Crowd - 蔡依林 22:26, 13 May 2016 (UTC)).
I think this Article can be removed. I have moved everything to [Default applications]]. (Andy Crowd - 蔡依林 11:30, 20 May 2016 (UTC)).
Thank you, I think you've done a great job, details should be discussed in Talk:Default applications, you can simply redirect this article to Default applications now. — Kynikos (talk) 09:38, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

Installation

"If you run xdg-open without a desktop environment, you should also install perl-file-mimeinfo". I tried bash -x xdg-open ... without a desktop environment (just xmonad) and noticed it uses xdg-mime regardless of whether perl-file-mimeinfo is installed. Is perl-file-mimeinfo still necessary? -- Limyreth (talk) 15:49, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

I don't think it has ever been necessary, it is just an optional dependency of xdg-utils. -- Lahwaacz (talk) 16:42, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
