Ideas
If you want to start discussing some of these before I get there, go for it!
- Delete [10] and User talk:Kynikos/Dm-crypt with LUKS when the restructuring is done
- Ask Pierre to publish LocalSettings.php and include/require there the database connection data from another file, or vice versa publish a LocalSettings2.php that will be required in LocalSettings.php, where only the db connection data are stored (this can help hide the real location of the file with the connection data)
- Request to close FS#30045?
- Revise and possibly expand ArchWiki:Contributing
- After that the "ArchWiki Tutorial" link in Main Page could be pointed to ArchWiki:Contributing (and swapped with "Forum Etiquette"?).
- Add some references to Special:SpecialPages tools
- Also reconsider [11]
- Write checklists for the most common operations
- Deleting a page:
- When marking a page for deletion, the content shouldn't be removed (including redirect code)
- A similar checklist is needed when breaking redirects (e.g. when marking them for deletion)
- Check interlanguage backlinks at least on the same wiki (Help:i18n#Finding articles with specific interlanguage links)
- Moving a page
- Creating a page
- Moving a section within an article or to another article
- Deleting content
- Adding a translation
- ...?
- Deleting a page:
- Internationalization:
- Add Serbian and Vietnamese interwiki links?
- ArchWiki Translation Team (Language) pages could be associated with localized Category:Request:Translation (Language) categories
- Templates should be coded so that they are language-neutral, with all their messages coded as {{{msg1|default English message}}}: non-English articles should use meta-templates that simply call the basic template localizing its messages: {{Template|msg1=localized message}}
- An alternative could make use of parser functions (should be installed, http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:ParserFunctions) in order to recognize the page namespace and sub-namespace and print the correct messages
- Templates:
- The documentation of article status templates requires improvement
- Use Template:Deletion also for sections? (modify the heading)
- Merge Template:Expansion and Template:Stub?
- Template:Split? (as opposed to Template:Merge)
- Move Template:Moveto to Template:Move and Translateme to Translate?
- Move Template:Out of date to Template:Outdated?
- Is Template:Bad translation necessary? (Accuracy, Poor writing, Translateme, Out of date, Stub and Expansion could replace it more accurately)
- Template:Poor formatting? Or Template:Poor style to include also Template:Poor writing?
- Use Template:META Error in more templates? Create, translate and use localized versions.
- Move Template:META Error to Template:META Undefined Parameter?
- Template:Pkg and Template:AUR: add a 2nd optional argument for specifying package version (thus keeping link style)? e.g. pacman<=3.5 Maybe just allow to specify an alternative anchor, like it works for normal links: this would even allow bots to replace all direct links with those templates, also when they don't use the package name as the anchor text.
Consider creating Template:Pkg search and Template:AUR search for linking to generic searches instead of package pages - Template with category to keep track of external bug reports?
- Check Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Box_BLUE - Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Note, Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Box_RED - Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Warning, Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Box_GREEN - Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Tip
Instead of using queries to get the differences, we could just delete the meta-templates "Box COLOR", making Note, Warning and Tip use Box directly, thus also preventing the Box COLOR templates to be used inappropriately - Do we need Template:FAQ or can we just always use normal sections like in FAQ?
- Same thing for Template:News
- Deprecate Template:Note and Template:Tip? Normal text formatting like bold and italic could be used to replace them
- Template:Announcement (find better name?) to be used for _temporary_ announcements instead of Note?
- Deprecate Template:Wikipedia and Template:Gentoo? (used sparingly) Remember their translations!
- Template for linking forum threads in the vein of Pkg, AUR, Grp, Bug...
- Rename all meta templates (only used by other templates) with a "META_" prefix?
- Template:Box is for example used directly in some articles: at the moment Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Box isn't be helpful to find them all, but if the template is moved to the new name, the templates using it are updated to use the new name, and the old name is left as a redirect, Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Box is indeed going to show only the wanted results
- Rename code formatting templates to "mi", "mb", "mh"? This would emphasize the fact that they are to be used in general when monospace ("m") is required, possibly not only strictly for code. This would also put them in analogy with <b> and <i> (but would reduce the analogy with <code>)
- Maybe change the policy of deleting closed discussion to Wikipedia's archiving solution
- Regulate blank lines below section headings in Help:Style#Blank lines?
- Rename Table of Contents to Category Tree?
- Disk Encryption should be mentioned in the Beginners' Guide
- Mention p2p file sharing clients in Backup Programs?
- Split Common Applications/Games from Common Applications?
- Merge PKGBUILD Templates with PKGBUILD? See https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1127103#p1127103
- Forum-like presentation of the discussions in the wiki:
- Use tables to show discussions like threads
- Can show the number of threads/posts, last post date, users participating... through api queries
- Initialize with a query to all talk pages, then maintain daily with the bot, querying the recent changes
- Main page would list all the wiki talk namespaces
- For each namespace (use subpages) list all the talks in chronological order with some details
- For each talk (can't use subpages) display the number of discussions (parse section headings, also display the titles?)
- Submit dark CSS skin?
- Update content of Category:English with links to the most important articles and link it from Main Page
- Do we really need localized Sandboxes? Sandbox (Português) Caixa de Areia (note it's categorized also under Category:Português)
- Clean up the various subpages of Sandbox?
- Move Daemon to Daemons?
- Define how much time must pass before a dead link can be deleted since it was marked with linkrot
- Remember there are also MediaWiki:Sidebar, MediaWiki:Common.css and MediaWiki:Common.js, MediaWiki:Sitenotice, MediaWiki:Anonnotice, MediaWiki:Editnotice, MediaWiki:Talkpagetext, MediaWiki:Editinginterface, MediaWiki:Newarticletext, see mw:Manual:Interface/Sitenotice, mw:Help:Edit notice
- See if I can improve Python Package Guidelines a bit
- See if the short articles in Category:DeveloperWiki can be merged somewhere
- Merge Community repo candidates somewhere?
- Decide what to do with Community cleanup (merge with DeveloperWiki:Community_Repo_Cleanup?), Christmas Cleanup (merge with DeveloperWiki:Community_Repo_Cleanup?), Multilib Cleanup (merge with DeveloperWiki:Community_Repo_Cleanup?), Rebuilds:Libnl3, Berlios Packages, ArchHosting
See Talk:Christmas Cleanup
Make a proper DeveloperWiki namespace? - Create an ArchWiki:Statistics page?
- move there ArchWiki:Maintenance Team#Statistics?
- top contributors? (all time, last 30 days, all time edits/day (considers registration date)) query1, query2 -- do not include special users (admins, maintainers, bots) or put them in a separate list
- forum thread
- Wikipedia:List_of_Wikipedians_by_number_of_edits
- think well about the possible negative effects (but also about the positive ones)
- the page could be easily kept up to date with Wiki Monkey
