Linking to subsections from edit summaries

When referring to article sections in edit summaries, you can use the #section format (If you want to refer to a section in a different article, e.g. when editing a discussion page, you can prepend the article: #article#section. For a few extra characters this allows anyone interested to directly jump to the section at hand. -- Alad (talk) 16:40, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

Not sure why you are giving me above advice, as I have employed this many times in many edits. Perhaps cite a specific example of a time when I did not? quequotion (talk) 15:35, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
Going over your last 2000 edits, I counted 12 (!) occurences where the edit summary included a link - and those 12 times were only because it was a page move and the links were automatically added by mediawiki. :/ If you want a specific example: [1]. -- Alad (talk) 15:43, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
I see, I misread. You are talking about formatting in edit summaries; not actual edits. Tried looking up how to do this in MediaWiki a long time ago but couldn't find it; haven't thought about it since. I'll try to keep it in mind for the future. quequotion (talk) 16:08, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
Indeed. But perhaps even simpler, when editing a section through its own "edit" link, the edit summary is prefilled with /* Section title */, which is rendered into a section link as well upon saving; your edit summaries seem to almost always (but not always) lose this syntax for some reason, perhaps it's due to how you're opening the sections for editing? -- Kynikos (talk) 15:10, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
You don't get a section title when you edit the whole page. Some edits span multiple sections (such as changing every case of "PKGBUILD" to PKGBUILD or PKGBUILD, in which case there is no appropriate section title to insert), or relocating a section from one area to another (in which case I usually typed out the section title myself).
In any case, far more of my edits have section title than don't--especially if you discount multiple-section edits and whole page edits (like redirections and archiving)--though I will admit I may have accidentally deleted a few. quequotion (talk) 15:35, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
I see now what has gone wrong; I misinterpreted /* */ as something like a comment, that would either prevent edit summaries from being accepted or prevent the content between them from being printed (in part because the wiki refuses edits with only this content in the edit summary; led me to believe the wiki treated such content as not existing) eg. I have been deleting them by hand almost every time. quequotion (talk) 16:08, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
Hehe win-win then, you save time and your summaries are clearer, relevant docs are at meta:Help:Edit summary, thanks. -- Kynikos (talk) 16:23, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
