Introduction

Wicd is a connection manager that can handle wireless and wired interfaces. It is written in Python and GTk. It is not yet in the Arch Linux repositories but can be build from AUR.

Installation

First you need to download the dependencies. Login as su and run

pacman -S dbus-python gtk2 pygtk

If you have network-manager installed remove it since wicd clashes with it.

Then download the tarball from AUR, build a package for pacman and install it. Login as su and execute the following commands.

mkdir /tmp/wicd-build
cd /tmp/wicd-build
wget http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/wicd/wicd.tar.gz
tar -xf wicd.tar.gz
cd wicd
makepkg
pacman -U wicd*.pkg.tar.gz

Daemons

Wicd needs the dbus daemon to work. Run

/etc/rc.d/dbus start

to start it. Now start the wicd daemon.

/etc/rc.d/wicd start

If you want both to start during bootup edit your /etc/rc.conf and add dbus and wicd to your list of daemons.

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus wicd network netfs ...)

GUI

To have the GUI run

/opt/wicd/tray-edgy.py
