Proposed deletion

Since the content of this page has been merged into Install from Existing Linux, best to reduce confusion and delete this page.

I don't think this content has been effectively merged yet. The "alternative" method presented in Install from Existing Linux covers how to manually unpack the ISO/image and run the installer from another environment, whereas this article describes how to arbitrarily boot from install medium without wasting a CD. I could see this as a separate section in Install from Existing Linux, provided this method still works!

It still seems to work with the archboot images. Even easier than in this article: just use archboot's kernel/initrd and adjust grub... this is great if you have no external drives, can not boot from usb and no free partition (either you are brave and reformat everything - archboot is completely in ram - or you put initrd/kernel onto swap). But loading the iso itself seems to work as well.

I have replaced the deletion-request template with an out-of-date template because nothing in this topic is present in Install from Existing Linux. The isos are looking for the root device by label, so be sure to label the extra-partition (or change the line in isolinux.cfg) accordingly. See /boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg.Hokasch 05:57, 25 May 2010 (EDT)
Using dd to put the ISO onto the extra partition is sufficient. Changing isolinux.cfg is pointless because you won't be using it to load the kernel anyway. Rransom 17:40, 25 May 2010 (EDT)

I've rewritten this page to explain how to boot an official ISO image from a hard disk partition using GRUB. I haven't tried using archboot yet, because the official image worked perfectly for me this time. The instructions for booting from LILO are still here, at the end of the page, in case someone still uses LILO for some reason. Rransom 18:19, 25 May 2010 (EDT)
