Unknown Issues

Considering how long it has been since anyone brought any of the listed issues up, and how much Pantheon has changed in that time, I am going to delete most of this section. If anyone experiences problems with Pantheon on Archlinux, I invite you to join the forum thread to discuss them. quequotion (talk) 23:29, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Is this working for anyone? It may well be broken, still looking into it. quequotion (talk) 19:52, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

I added this yesterday, and then removed it today after some test building:

For the full elementary OS experience, there is a metapackage pantheon-git-metaAUR, which pulls all of the development version desktop environment and application packages that are currently available.

This is not a viable installation method at the moment, as various packages fail to compile or install. quequotion (talk) 06:23, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

"Stable Release" vs. Development packages

Ideally, this article should not be recommending -git packages, but last I checked the "stable release" packages were fraught with problems such as missing ubuntu-patched dependencies and library versions that are outdated in Archlinux. Eventually, elementary OS will have a new release (some time following the next Ubuntu LTS release) and the code in the current -git package set could form a new "stable release" set. quequotion (talk) 12:44, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

Proposal (WIP): "stable release" Installation quequotion (talk) 15:14, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Started making some changes today, hopefully the new "Package sources" section will help people have an easier time setting up Pantheon on Archlinux. I'm still holding back on the sections "Desktop Environment" and everything after it. quequotion (talk) 17:51, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
  • We really need a pantheon-session package in community. What's holding back this package? (Note: I am aware of some issues with pantheon-sessionAUR, but Alucryd already has an excellent pantheon-session-gitAUR that could be adapted if upstream has a release to adapt it to)
  • dr_Styki, who has only ever made one post in the forums, seems to be the last person to do a full rundown of the install process. We really ought to verify his results (installing from scratch) and update this page accordingly (particularly the "Known issues" section looks like it needs work)
As the initial purpose of this proposal is mostly fulfilled, I've repurposed my full page draft (still WIP) for the upcoming elementary 6.0 release. This is in part a continuation of the initial proposal to recommend only stable-release versions of packages on this page: the next elementary OS release should allow for several packages that exist now only in the AUR to be released in [community] (if there is enough interest). Chief among these would be pantheon-session, which is slated to get a new tagged release including significant fixes for installing Pantheon outside of elementary OS. quequotion (talk) 12:10, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

This section seems weak to me. I'd rather cut most of it out and link users to appropriate information about gnome-session on the GNOME page, but the focus of that page is on GNOME as a desktop environment itself and not the capabilities of GNOME's framework as a host for derivative desktop environments.

It would be better, for example, to link "gnome-session" to the section GNOME#GNOME Sessions, but that subsection only mentions the three sessions provided by GNOME and nothing about how gnome-session work (.session files, etc.). quequotion (talk) 11:39, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
