My Linux story

I started using Linux sometime in late 1997 from a Debian CD that fell out of a Linux magazine at a Borders bookstore. I bought the magazine since it looked cool and installed the software on a spare computer I had to see what it was about. Downloading wasn't an option in those days since dialup would have taken an eternity. Installing Debian or any distribution in the late 90's was a pain in the ass. Video and Internet issues seemed to be the bane of my existence for almost a week. Somehow I got everything working and I felt I accomplished something no one else was doing at the time. In 1998 I purchased a copy of Mandrake Linux. Mandrake is what got me really hooked on Linux and Open-Source software in general. I used it for several years until I got a copy of Corel Linux. I installed that and used it for a while, but went back to Mandrake since it was becoming a behemoth at that time in the Linux world. All the cool neat stuff was coming out on it first. Mandrake managed to make their installation, maintenance, and usage a breeze to use. A while later I started distrohoping after more distributions started becoming more advanced. I used SUSE, Red Hat, Debian and several other distros for a while until Ubuntu came around in 2004. I spent over a decade using Ubuntu and its derivatives. Sometime in 2015 I came across Arch from an article I read. I tried installing it several times and failed. Finally got it working and I was impressed by how simple and vast it was. So that's how it came to be. I still use other distributions, but Arch is the only one I use as a daily driver. I also use Windows since it pays the bills. 😆
