User:NetSysFire/IRC quotes

From ArchWiki

#archlinux-wiki is a public channel. phrik is present, but can not do multiline quote grabs. As of writing, this has greatly annoyed the author of this page, who then decided to capture some of the funny moments in here.

Quotes

Context: alad had issues with a step on NVIDIA/Troubleshooting.

<@alad> Poor performance is probably too vague and the section should be renamed
<@lahwaacz> oh well, you did not write it does not solve the issue /o\
<@lahwaacz> *it = the default...
<@lahwaacz> alad: I've got a better solution for you: don't suspend :P
<@alad> rip!
<@alad> I just noticed I linked to an old document from nvidia 450-something, and that a second workaround is available
<@alad> damn google always linking outdated documents
<@alad> lahwaacz: I'm thinking of an even better solution, just remove this nvidia card from this PC again
<@lahwaacz> alad: be sure to document it on the wiki!
<@alad> :D

Context: An edit added three long paragraphs to a page.

<@alad> this looks like it could be expressed in a few sentences
<jasonwryan> “I didn't have time to write a short edit…”
<@alad> :D

Explanation

Context: A forum thread discussed Secure Boot and criticized the information in the Wiki

<Foxboron> diabonas: there was this tweet that one shouldn't discuss boot security with people that don't understand boot security :p
<diabonas> :D hey, if I felt like talking about stuff that nobody really understands or cares about anyway, I would just return to my PhD studies now ;)

Context: NetSysFire discovers alad speaks French.

<+NetSysFire> say something!
<@alad> man, i3 is really embarassing
<@alad> 1 misbehaving client and the whole thing locks up
<@alad> it's as much of a joke as when I last tried it 3 years ago
<+NetSysFire> thats not french!
<+NetSysFire> i didnt like i3 either though
<+NetSysFire> mostly because you cant hide clients properly, i hated its workspace behavior and some more minor things. now i use awesome and i am happy. qtile looks good though, too
<@alad> NetSysFire: Qu'esc qui est petit, rond, vert, et qui monte et descend?
<@alad> Un petit pois dans un ascenseur
<@alad> :O
<@alad> Que'est-ce *
<+NetSysFire> !eightball did he just use google translate for that?
<phrik> NetSysFire: It is so.
<@alad> no
<@alad> rip

Context: Self-explanatory.

<+NetSysFire> https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Direct_modem_connection is that even still relevant?

<kattjevfel> I had no choice

Context: Someone linked Edward Snowden's tweet about the Wiki.

<kattjevfel> jasonwryan: thank god my only skill has become useful
<jasonwryan> we all have our moment in the sun: embrace it!

Context: The bot wrongly flagged as dead links that only required to be logged in.

<kattjevfel> lahwaacz: surely the bot could use cookies from a logged in account to work around this?
<@lahwaacz> it could, but someone would have to implement it...
<kattjevfel> ah yes, that's where everything goes south :p
<@lahwaacz> rip
<+NetSysFire> the wiki is a constant south pole
<kattjevfel> !check if the wiki is a constant south pole
<phrik> Testing if the wiki is a constant south pole: [PASS]
<kattjevfel> welp
-*- +NetSysFire shows kattjevfel the compass
-*- kattjevfel covers their eyes

Context: Discussing changes to un-break the search function.

<+NetSysFire> i frickin hate phabricator. its even worse than flyspray
<@lahwaacz> phabricator is fine, it's better than mediawiki
<@lahwaacz> nl6720: I guess the question is what could possible break during the migration to a different $wgScriptPath
<@nl6720> I hate gerrit which wikimedia uses, it's so unintuitive
<@nl6720> lahwaacz: nothing! have we ever made a mistake?

Context: The default CSS on the wiki was changed, which made some vocal people unhappy.

<wCPO> or we can just wait for upstream to fix it
<@nl6720> it's debatable if it's worth investing time to make everyone happy
<@nl6720> I expect the unhappy people to do the majority of the work in this case
<wCPO> I kinda seen this before. Someone creates a issue in a open-source project instead of fixing the issue.. :)
<@nl6720> it's not like I don't understand it. I'm just not willing to invest my time
<wCPO> that is fair :)
<+NetSysFire> effort is a sacred thing that must not be wasted
<wCPO> NetSysFire is wise
<+NetSysFire> no i simply recited that from when nl6720 said that
<wCPO> no reason to spoil yourself. Just quota smart people and pretend it was you..
<+NetSysFire> this is the wiki channel, i gotta source my claim
<wCPO> true https://xkcd.com/285/

Context: Self-explanatory.

<Foxboron> nl6720: I just sent rotten fish to your home address
<@nl6720> Foxboron: is that the so called Norwegian delicacy?
<Foxboron> nl6720: Yes, I'm leaving it up for interpretation if it's a veiled death threat or a christmas present
<@nl6720> 🤔

Context: Discussing the migration to PHP8, and the required testing beforehand.

<@nl6720> devops can do anything, really
<+NetSysFire> oh no
<wCPO> we got a lot of power for some reason🤷 not sure it was a wise decision
<alad> I don't like it either, but when devops got access to SQL db then what can yo udo
<+NetSysFire> youdo, the ancient martial art of delegating responsibilities
<alad> rip

Context: Discussing the KSMBD page that had been recently created.

<@alad> I thought someone put a BDSM manual on the archwiki

<jelle> SFW
<@alad> jelle: well isn't there a strong correlation between LARPers and BDSM
<jelle> lol

Context: A new filter was introduced to forbid edits with an empty summary.

<@nl6720> looks like [the AbuseFilter] has caught more people than just Foxboron :D
<Foxboron> nl6720: OY
<@nl6720> just saying...
<Foxboron> I want my crimes deleted
<+NetSysFire> denied
<@nl6720> NetSysFire++
<@nl6720> it should get drowned out by others soon enough. unless you perform more crimes, that is
<+NetSysFire> i also have records in the Big Crime Book™

Context: Discussing a merge request that multiple admins deemed fine without testing.

-*- +NetSysFire notes that all wiki admins yolo and test in production
<@nl6720> isn't that how everything is done in Arch?
<+NetSysFire> arch says, keep it simple = testing in a testing environment is too complex = yolo and test in prod
<Erus_Iluvatar> that's what backups are for, right ?

Context: Talking about a page that attracted unwanted commercial self-promotion.

<jasonwryan> NetSysFire+: hmm maybe we should semiprotect that page
<+NetSysFire> is NetSysFire+ the paid version of mine?
<jasonwryan> it's your better self, obvs :p
<+NetSysFire> so my "hey lets just warn folks to not misbehave" comment is from my worse part
<+NetSysFire> hmmm
<jasonwryan> your faith in humanity is touching and sweet
<jasonwryan> but totally misguided

Context: Self-explanatory.

Context: Discussing swap/zswap/rzam.

<wCPO> just throw hardware at the problem and you need neither (zram/zswap)
<+NetSysFire> - this message is sponsored by $ram_company, use the code "archwiki" for a 5% discount on your order!
<+Erus_Iluvatar> I wish!

Context: Talking about changes on an AbuseFilter.

<@nl6720> alright, done
<+NetSysFire> nl6720: did you block all kinds of editing?
<+NetSysFire> i heard this would improve the wiki by 100%
<@nl6720> I'm sure it would :P

Context: Joking about keeping a continuous editing streak.

<+Erus_Iluvatar> I'll never catch up to you two :P
<@nl6720> your only option is to outlive me
-*- +NetSysFire gets the hitman

Context: Alad discovers a working emoji picker.

<@alad> I will replace all my git commits and edit summaries with emojis from now on, thanks Erus_Iluvatar
<+Erus_Iluvatar> Some people have already tried to do that 🤣
<+Erus_Iluvatar> next step is emojis in code
<@alad> 🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀

<+svito> Linux -> Arch Linux /s
<+NetSysFire> *Arch GNU/Linux
<kattjevfel> Argh Linux*

Context: Discussing the best page to move information about sbctl.

<@nl6720> hmm, actually since sbctl can create keys, that would not be the correct place...
<@nl6720> perhaps in Tips and tricks?
-*- +Erus_Iluvatar delegates the responsibility to someone using Secure Boot :D
-*- @nl6720 doesn't use Secure Boot except for one VM
-*- Foxboron archives sbctl so people won't point at him

Explanation

Context: Talking about Gitlab's requirements for a real name when registering.

<@alad> my real name is Hard B. Ass
<@alad> you only hear it here
<kattjevfel> alad: can I call you Mr. Ass then?
<@alad> wow
<kattjevfel> is that a yes?
<@alad> Mr. Jevfel and Mr. Ass go to a bar
<+NetSysFire> alad: i dare you to put that into the arch gitlab
<@alad> both make an ass out of themselves
<kattjevfel> it's even better since "Jevfel" once translated means bastard

Context: The IRC channel topic used 🍌 as a separator in memory of the Bananagate.

<-- nl6720 has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
<+NetSysFire> nl6720 is gone, quick replace the bananas
<mefistofeles> ¬¬
<@alad> NetSysFire: you got it

<+NetSysFire> alad++
<+Erus_Iluvatar> heh, I would have though 🍒
<+Erus_Iluvatar> I was not that far :o
--> @nl6720 (~nl6720@archlinux/support/nl6720) has joined #archlinux-wiki

<Foxboron> I don't know C, no can do
<Foxboron> but I'm actively watching the code paths for changes
<+NetSysFire> get some glasses when you cant C

Context: Discussing how <nowiki/> works.

<+Erus_Iluvatar> NetSysFire: AIUI it's helping the parser
<+Erus_Iluvatar> same as when we have a list inside a note/tip/warning that needs a 1=
<+Erus_Iluvatar> and we have to add a <nowiki/> tag after the 1=
<+NetSysFire> okay so you dont truly understand it either
<+Erus_Iluvatar> and from what I understand, the self-closing <nowiki/> tag is the same as using the full <nowiki></nowiki>
<+NetSysFire> oh hmm
<+Erus_Iluvatar> deep down I understand nothing
<+NetSysFire> same
<+Erus_Iluvatar> :)
<+Erus_Iluvatar> I shoud /nick John_Snow

Context: Discussing where to migrate bugs related to the wiki of off Flyspray.

<+Erus_Iluvatar> the cynic in me would say "upstream" ;)
<wCPO> Erus_Iluvatar: I like your thinking, we don't have bugs ;)
<+Erus_Iluvatar> "only happy little accidents" :D

Context: Talking about Baldur's Gate 3.

<+NetSysFire> well, now tell us about your build alad
<+NetSysFire> given i havent even started playing
<@alad> I didn't look into builds yet
<@alad> but in 3.5 computerized D&D I would almost always play cleric or bard
<+NetSysFire> given hardbass, i'd bet you play bard, too
<+NetSysFire> called it

Context: Self-explanatory.

<bittcrak> hello??
<bittcrak> anyone online
<bittcrak> first time using an irc

<+NetSysFire> alad i cant see what you are writing, you need to write louder
<+Erus_Iluvatar> LIKE THIS?
<+NetSysFire> WHAAAT
<+NetSysFire> I CANT HEAR YOU
<+Erus_Iluvatar> Aye-aye, Captain!

Context: Someone created a new laptop page without following the guidelines.

<+Erus_Iluvatar> Nah, they created their account very recently, I'll let them finish writing undisturbed :P
<+Erus_Iluvatar> even the name of the page needs casing fixes :D
<+Erus_Iluvatar> I should make a clippy bot
<+Erus_Iluvatar> which messages users as soon as they create a laptop page
<+Erus_Iluvatar> pointing them to the laptop guidelines and other resources to write an article ^^
<+Erus_Iluvatar> "It looks like you're trying to create a laptop page, would you like help" ?
<+NetSysFire> lol
<+Erus_Iluvatar> OK no, you're right, I'll message them, it's painful to picture all the time they're wasting on something that will not be staying it that form
<+NetSysFire> i am always right
<+Erus_Iluvatar> You sound like my mother :D

Context: Someone mistakenly created their user page in the main namespace.

<+NetSysFire> aka lazy
<@alad> wowowowow
<@alad> is that how you talk to your boss who shows up once per year!?
<@alad> rude employees smh
<+NetSysFire> ah yes the one who has the highest salary yet does nothing and uses a private jet to get to the bus stop
<dvzrv|M> "soon to be replaced by a LLM™"
<@alad> rip
<@alad> NetSysFire: tbh private jets are required when the german bus takes 2 hours to get to the end of the street
<+NetSysFire> bus factor for the bus
<dvzrv|M> takes a bus to hit the bus

Context: Pondering if the rare pages that refer to a Windows CLI need a prompt and which one.

<@lahwaacz|M> regarding the discussion about CLI prompts for Windows, have you considered simply prefixing the Linux prompt $ with M? 😉
<+NetSysFire> M?
<+NetSysFire> i never heard that
<@lahwaacz|M> NetSysFire: `M$`, not `M?`
<@alad> ooh I get it now
<+NetSysFire> same

Context: Self-explanatory.

<+NetSysFire> why do they even email you instead of using the talk page
<@alad> is that a rhetorical question
<+NetSysFire> partly
-*- +NetSysFire emails the wiki admins with demands, too
<+NetSysFire> like a higher wage
<@alad> I'll increase your wage by 2000%
<@alad> 20 * 0 = 0

Context: NetSysFire mentioned being upset by the spaces in alad's smileys earlier.

<@alad> nl6720: \ : D /
<@nl6720> I was confused by the space too, but if that's how alad writes it, then it must be the correct way
<+NetSysFire> tsk
<@alad> ^
<+NetSysFire> i disapprove of all of this
<@alad> >: D
<+NetSysFire> no, stop with the spaces god dammit
<@alad> : O
<@alad> NetSysFire: I like going to space
<+NetSysFire> yes, you deserve to be ejected into the cold vacuum of space for that

Context: Double-checking an edit in arabic is a tough task for maintainers when translation tools don't see any difference before and after the change in the page.

<@Erus_Iluvatar> I'm completely OK if you find one more person to double-check tough
<@Erus_Iluvatar> *though
<+NetSysFire> i'll see if i can find some
-*- +NetSysFire suddenly considering going to arabic neighbors
<@Erus_Iluvatar> :D
<@Erus_Iluvatar> "Hi there fella', could you double check that wiki edit for me here?"

Context: A few people are having fun with staying on an editing streak.

<@Erus_Iluvatar> Is there a reason we stopped updating the global statistics?
<Strykar> We wanna see how NetSysFire really feels when his streak is lost
<@Erus_Iluvatar> Strykar: nah, the User statistics are up to date :P
<Strykar> Erus_Iluvatar: could've played along for five mins and said the User statistics were in danger too :P
<@Erus_Iluvatar> 🤣
<+NetSysFire> Strykar: evil
<+NetSysFire> if anyone should be worried about their streak its nl6720 tbh

<+NetSysFire> i'd like to duel with them but they arent on the arch summit. only a single wiki admin will be there :/

Context: NetSysFire fixed an erroneous information that had been added in 2011.

<@Erus_Iluvatar> NetSysFire: not the most ancient stuff I've seen lingering ^^
<+NetSysFire> yeah :/
<@Erus_Iluvatar> We'll fix it... Eventually
<+NetSysFire> thats the official archwiki motto now

Context: Erus_Iluvatar discovers nerdsniping.

<@Erus_Iluvatar> afaik there's no way to use a template on a page and not have the page show in the hidden category associat
<+NetSysFire> lets rule that out first
<@Erus_Iluvatar> Well it's easy, look at the content of https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Template:Dead_link
<phrik> Title: Template:Dead link - ArchWiki (at wiki.archlinux.org)
<@Erus_Iluvatar> using the template in a page adds it to
-*- +NetSysFire delegates doing the magic to Erus_Iluvatar
-*- @Erus_Iluvatar does not know magic
<+NetSysFire> then you shall learn
<+NetSysFire> its probably an if statement
<@Erus_Iluvatar> It's certainly an if statement :D
<@Erus_Iluvatar> Hmm
<@Erus_Iluvatar> NetSysFire: I hate you
<+NetSysFire> why? it looks like it worked
<@Erus_Iluvatar> I don't like that you know once you've hooked me on something I'm not going to let it go :D

Context: Self-explanatory.

<+NetSysFire> noooo the wiki is down
<+NetSysFire> for logged in users at least. and if you try to access special pages.
<+NetSysFire> nl6720: gromit said i should blame you for the outage. what did you do?!
<gromit> Let's put it this way: lahwaacz|M, Erus_Iluvatar and I are also to blame and there might have been a missing ";" involved x)

Context: Discussing a vanity Arch-related IP.

<bertptrs> nl6720: don't need to remember if you can reconstruct. How much more memerable than ascii "ARCH"
<+NetSysFire> i wouldnt have gotten this because i dont know ascii numericals in my brain
<bertptrs> 65 is capital A, that's really the only one you need to remember
<@nl6720> right... I always keep my ASCII decoder ring at hand when diagnosing network issues
<+NetSysFire> i cant tell if sarcasm or not
<@nl6720> :D
<+NetSysFire> is it? is it??!?
<@nl6720> it is!
<@Erus_Iluvatar> I mean, man 7 ascii https://man.archlinux.org/man/ascii.7
<phrik> Title: ascii(7) — Arch manual pages (at man.archlinux.org)
<+NetSysFire> yes but who knows this off the top of their head
<bertptrs> I do?
<+NetSysFire> nerd
<bertptrs> nerds, in my distro staff?
<+NetSysFire> unacceptable
<@Erus_Iluvatar> unavoidable
<+NetSysFire> i thought arch is mainstream now
<@Erus_Iluvatar> 🤣
<bertptrs> all the cool kids run Hannah Montana Linux

Context: Talking about the ArchWiki talk at debconf.[1]

<+NetSysFire> >Debian currently uses the MoinMoin 1.9 branch, which depends on Python 2.7.
<+NetSysFire> classic debian
<nl6720> my favorite part was "its wiki might give the ArchWiki project a run for its money" 😆
<nl6720> where else will people be able to read about Linux 2.6 other than Debian wiki

Context: Same as the above.

<+NetSysFire> >Klinkovský said that there were about 30 to 50 maintainers at the moment.
<+NetSysFire> ehhhhhhhhhhh
<+NetSysFire> theres maybe 7 active people right now
<@Erus_Iluvatar> :D
<@Erus_Iluvatar> And yeah, both of us widely overestimated the number of members of the team /o\
<@nl6720> looks like there are 33 officially
<@Erus_Iluvatar> most of which have not edited in a year :P
<@Erus_Iluvatar> we might be at a point where we want to move a chunk of them to "fellows" for clarity
* nl6720 thinks charcoal would be a more correct title
<@Erus_Iluvatar> charcoal?
<@nl6720> they burned out
