Hi Tomd123, I wasn't sure where to post this, hope you read this message,

I just wanted to drop you a note about this package you maintain in community: mpdscribble (great package by the way!

By default, it installs an example configuration file in /etc/mpdscribble.conf, but I think this "example" config file should be named /etc/mpdscribble.conf.example instead, the same way the git version of mpdscribble in AUR does it.

But anyway, it's not so much the name of this file that I'm concerned about, it's more the contents of the file: it seems to me to be a bit outdated if you compare it with what man mpdscribble says. On the other hand, the wiki section about mpdscribble was almost up-to-date but did not work perfectly for me, so I made minor edits to it (it contained no reference to /etc/mpdscribble.conf.example, which is fine, and the main issue I found with the article had to do with the "journal" option being in the wrong section of the config file, so I fixed that (and I made notes about my edits that you can see here if interested.))

Now someone wanting to configure mpdscribble should be just fine by following these updated instructions in the wiki, but I feel /etc/mpdscribble.conf.example should be amended anyway.

My rationale is this: even though the ArchWiki is a great resource, one should still be able to figure out how to configure mpdscribble (or any package for that matter) by relying solely on its man page (+ the /etc/mpdscribble.conf.example file in this case). Especially since pacman gives these instructions after installation (I found it misleading to follow these instructions without first consulting the wiki):

"An example config is provided in /etc/mpdscribble.conf.example"

"For system-wide config copy this file to /etc/mpdscribble.conf"
"For per-user config copy this file to ~/.mpdscribble/mpdscribble.conf"

I searched google for a properly formatted mpdscribble.conf to no avail; even the link to mpdscribble's official page given in our wiki was not very helpful, so I made my own attempt and posted it in the comments of the AUR's git version of mpdscribble. I don't know if it's done properly, I tried to make it as general as possible, and I'm sure it could be improved.

All this being said, I wasn't sure if you are the right person to contact for this change, but I feel it's such a small change, I would try with the maintainer first. I know it's a minor change, it would just make installation/configuration of this package go more smoothly. I mean, the package works great and all as it is, I just try to address minor issues as I encounter them, to help make ArchLinux, this great distro, even more streamlined. Every little bit helps, and I try to do what I can given my limited skills!

Thanks!

I decided to use mpdscibble.conf.example and use the default conf that comes with the package as the .example. The package doesn't provide mpdscribble.conf anymore

Thanks a lot for this change Tomd123, much appreciated; but now there seems to be a permission issue; I had to copy /etc/mpdscribble.conf.example as root, or else I received this error when trying to copy it as a regular user:
     [montague@arch ~]$ cp /etc/mpdscribble.conf.example ~/.mpdscribble/mpdscribble.conf
cp: cannot open `/etc/mpdscribble.conf.example' for reading: Permission denied
Thanks again for your attention to this and for all your hard work! --Montague 15:08, 21 February 2011 (EST)
