The Dell Latitude E5430 is a business line laptop made for corporate users who have a need for durability. This article will tell you how to get the basic components of the laptop running with Arch.

Hardware support

Audio

Audio works out of the box.

PC speaker capability is included. See PC speaker for information on how to disable it and more.

Bluetooth

Install the package bluez, start bluetooth systemd service and use your preferred front-end to manage connections. See Bluetooth for more information.

Fingerprint reader

Install the package fprintd. It is required to create fingerprint signature. See fprint for more useful information.

Touchpad

Install the package libinput for enabling the touchpad.

Wireless

You may find out which wireless network card you have with:

$ lspci | grep Broadcom | grep -v Ethernet

It seems this laptop may have BCM5761 or BCM43228.

In both cases, you will need the proprietary driver broadcom-wl.

Troubleshooting

Issue with XKeyboardConfig

While starting the graphic interface, you might come across with the bug #77504 reported in freedesktop bugzilla. It seems to apply to both Xorg and Wayland. During the display server startup, the XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomb) reports:

> Warning:          Compat map for group 2 redefined
>                   Using new definition
> Warning:          Compat map for group 3 redefined
>                   Using new definition
> Warning:          Compat map for group 4 redefined
>                   Using new definition
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

One solution is to comment out the following lines in the file /usr/share/X11/xkb/compat/basic. The double forward-slash is the comment symbol.

 //    group 2 = AltGr;                                                                
 //    group 3 = AltGr;
 //    group 4 = AltGr; 

This solution of provided in the forum thread Xkeyboard/xkbcomp gives warnings.
