Support: irc.freenode.net #archlinux Archlinux Wiki Basic Installation Before you begin, make a backup of all the files you want to keep. This installation will get you a nice clean computer, installed with archlinux only(byebye windows).

1) Install from cd (auto partitioning, Base package only, install kernel, install grub)

- Burn archlinux base-iso from here - Boot up with the cdrom (Check bootorder in the bios, to boot from cd) - Type Quote: /arch/setup in the console to start the setup - Select cdrom to install from - Select "Prepare Hard Drive", "Auto-Prepare", "Yes" (no way back now) Wait until your harddrive has been formatted. Select "cancel" after completion. - Select "Select Packages", "Mount the CD-ROM and install from there", "OK". If you got multiple cdrom-drives, it will ask which one to install from. If you select the wrong one, you'll get an error message. Clicking just "OK" will probably select the right drive automatically. - Select "OK", "OK"(base only), "Yes", "OK" - Select "Install Packages", "OK", "Continue" Archlinux main-software(~94,3mb) is installed now. - Select "Configure System", "Nano", "/etc/rc.conf System Config" Check for these lines. Make sure eth0 is set on dhcp. Comment out (#) the eth0 192.168 thing. Code:

  1. nano /etc/rc.conf

lo="lo 127.0.0.1"

  1. eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168$

eth0="dhcp" INTERFACES=(lo eth0)

Also change HOSTNAME to some name you like. Now save(Ctrl-O) and exit(Ctrl-X). - Select "/etc/hosts Network Hosts" Code: 127.0.0.1 *yourhostname*.localdomain *yourhostname*

Make sure yourhostname equals HOSTNAME from the previous edited file(rc.conf). save(Ctrl-O) and exit(Ctrl-X). This is all for now. Select "Cancel" - Select "Install Kernel", "v2.6", "Continue", "OK" - Select "Install Bootloader", "GRUB", "OK" We don't have to change anything for now. Close(Ctrl-X), "OK", "OK" It's fine to use the default GRUB location /dev/hda... Now let's reboot. - Select "Exit Install", type "reboot", and remove the archlinux installation cd-rom. When the system is rebooting you will notice the bootloader(GRUB) first. Hit enter, and let the system do it's thing. When you get asked to login, just type "root". - Set a root-password by typing "passwd". Try to remember it ;)

The only thing we have for now is the console, but your internet connection should work now. If something in your network configuration is not setup properly, you can fix it anytime and restart the network like this: Code: /etc/rc.d/network restart

Next thing is to update the pacman-list. This is the repository-system that archlinux uses, and you will use it alot to install new software.

  • Tip: if you experience slow package-downloads, you can alter the repository-list. This way you can select which servers to use. Be careful though. Some servers may not be up to date.

Code: nano /etc/pacman.d/community nano /etc/pacman.d/current nano /etc/pacman.d/extra

  • Tip: To use the community repositories(with lots of additional software), you have to uncomment a line from the pacman configfile.

Code: sudo nano /etc/pacman.conf

  1. [community]
  2. Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first

Include = /etc/pacman.d/community

2) Update pacman list & existing packages

Code: pacman -Syu

You'll get the message: "Replace mkinitrd with mkinitcpio from "current"? [Y/n] - Type "Y" You'll get the message: "Replace devfsd with udev from "current"? [Y/n] - Type "Y" Software updates(like the newest kernel, and utilities) will be installed now. - Proceed with "Y" 3) Change the grub loader to use the right kernel name Code: nano /boot/grub/menu.lst

Check for these lines, and make sure the initrd is the same as the green part:

     title Arch Linux
     root (hd0,0)
     kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda3 ro
     initrd /kernel26.img

4) Get kde

- This will install kde desktop-environment and some additional stuff, that's part of the kde package. Code: pacman -S kde samba

  • Tip: When you get a corrupted package error for some reason, you can manually remove it by typing "pacman -Scc *packagename*"

- Get a localization file for kde Code: sudo pacman -Ss i1

Find the right language, and enter: Code: sudo pacman -S kde-i18n-*your-language*

5) Get latest X-server(needed to run kde) and some additional tools Code: pacman -S xorg font-bh-ttf xterm hwd sudo mesa-apps

6. Install videocard drivers 6.1) Install ATI-drivers (fglrx) Code: pacman -S ati-fglrx ati-fglrx-utils

6.2) Install Nvidia drivers Code: pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils nvclock

- Select "Y"(remove conflicting libgl),"Y"

7. Setup the X-server 7.1 ATI Code: hwd -x mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.hwd etc/X11/xorg.conf

7.2 Nvidia Code: nvidia-xconfig

8) Add a user Code: adduser

Fill in your username and password. At all other options you can just hit enter(default). 12)Login to kde Code: /etc/rc.d/kdm start

  • Tip: You can use sudo to launch programs as root from kde's konsole. This way you can easily use a gui-texteditor like kate to modify files(copy/paste). You need to add yourself first to the list of sudoers from the console(ctrl-alt-f1, login as root, nano /etc/sudoers, add user beneath root, save, and return to kde(ctrl-alt-f7))

13. Modify xorg.conf (from kde) 13.1 ATI-Settings Open konsole, and type: Code: sudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

14) Auto-load kde on boot Code: sudo /etc/rc.conf

Tip#2: Instead of using sudo, you can also open a console, by hitting ctrl+alt+f1-f5. You can login as root there... Code:

  1. FGLRX IS ATI ONLY!

MODULES=(fglrx)

  1. make sure kdm is in the DAEMONS list

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !hotplug hwd !pcmcia network netfs crond kdm alsa)

15) Reboot, and check if hardwareacceleration is working Code: glxinfo | grep render If should say yes...

Addons Install Beryl/XGL (OpenGL accelerated desktop with fancy effects)

16) Add repositories for beryl and Xgl(sudo nano /etc/pacman.conf, add the following lines) Code: [brain0] Server = http://www-users.rwth-aachen.de/thomas.baechler/arch/brain0/os/i686 [danimoth] Server = http://jjdanimoth.altervista.org/arch/i686

17) Get the beryl-packages, Xgl and mesa-xgl-cvs Code: pacman -Sy beryl-svn xgl-git mesa-xgl-cvs

Now you've installed beryl and xgl, it's time to add it as a session to kde. This way your kde doesn't depend on beryl, and you can easily switch back to a non-xgl/beryl session if something goes wrong.

18) Create a session entry (it may happen that the directory /usr/share/xsessions doesn't exist. In that case you should make one: sudo mkdir /usr/share/xsessions) Code: sudo nano /usr/share/xsessions/xgl.desktop

Code: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XGL Exec=/usr/bin/startxgl.sh Icon= Type=Application

19) Make it executable Code: sudo chmod +x /usr/share/xsessions/xgl.desktop

20) Make a script to startup xgl and beryl Code: sudo nano /usr/bin/startxgl.sh

Code:

  1. !/bin/sh
  2. Xgl :1 -fullscreen -br -kb -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer &

Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer & LD_PRELOAD=/opt/mesa-xgl-cvs/lib/libGL.so.1.2 DISPLAY=:1 dbus-launch beryl --display :1 & DISPLAY=:1 dbus-launch emerald --replace & DISPLAY=:1 dbus-launch startkde

21) Make startxgl.sh executable Code: sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/startxgl.sh

22) Check if xgl/beryl is working Code: /usr/bin/startxgl.sh

If everything goes right, you get a nice beryl-splash, and kde will run in another window. If this happens, you can uncomment the first Xgl line in startxgl.sh, and comment the other. Code: Xgl :1 -fullscreen -br -kb -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbu$

  1. Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer &

End your session and select the brand new xgl-session from your loginscreen. Have fun wobbling! :lol:

ps. right now beryl has some kind of dbus-bug, that prevents you to see your saved settings/themes directly reflected in your beryl-sessions. So you have to make your changes and reboot your session for now...
