Proper way to add icons in PKGBUILD

How to do it?

E.g. I have a desktop app package and a 512×512 PNG icon. What's the idiom to put into PKGBUILD to generate the appropriate downscaled sizes, install to correct places, regenerate needed caches?..

I'm certainly not the only one looking for a quick answer to this. It isn't easily searchable either; this page looks like the perfect place to add it.
