I'm interested in the setup that you mentioned in the Nvidia page. I too have a w520 but I'm having trouble getting the nvidia module to recognize my screens. I have disabled nouveau via blacklisting and installed the nvidia drivers, however upon startup the tty framebuffers don't communicate with the screen. Consequently the computer continues booting, but my screen doesn't change from the grub loading message. If you have any idea what the problem is, I'd love to hear from you, Thanks in advance. :D
